Actually, Kathy, I sent a reply to your e-mail regarding your receipt of the poem. Yikes. I think I need to pour myself a glass of wine.

2.18 a creator at work
wow some of the heaviest rains have ever had here over the last 24 hours.
so far we have had 5 major lots of rain in the last day with flooding gutters but no problems like you had Amelia. It is really widespread and many parched areas of the state are receiving this rainband. lets hope the dartmouth, eildon and thompson dams are all getting a drenching.

Dino - As the story goes: When Moses was bringing the children of Israel out of Egypt, they complained about being hungary, so the Lord gave them mana every day - it would not keep till the next day. Soon they tired of the mana and complained and the Lord added quail to their diet.

What vision some have
One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

I like your Buddhist story about the origin of world disharmony. Fear and deluded suspicions are often the origin of problems, and insecuity the source of greed.

Rayray: Christmas thoughts - just wonderful, as usual!

Shosho: Don't usually imbibe eggnog, but with Kahlua - sounds great!

Broni: What a lovely story, if only more people could see that money and possessions are not what's valuable in life. It's family and friends and the memories associated with them.

Eve - one further thing about the growing use of corn that you mentioned. Here in my part of the country, the fertilizers used to grow the corn are creating a "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico that is killing all the fish and shrimp - it is getting larger and larger, so fishermen have to go farther and farther from land in order to make a living!

OZ - Today is the Longest Day of the year for you! Your summer solstice. While up north it is winter solstice (the shortest day of the year - in Barrow Alaska the sun will not rise).

Are there not slow-release fertilisers that do not get lost into the water-courses? They would make sense to the ecology, fisheries, and to the farmer himself. It seems stupid putting fertiliser onto the land that is so readily lost by leaching.

Rayray, you may very well be right. There was just an article a couple of days ago in the newspaper about the growing size of the dead zone. I didn't have time to even read the whole article, I guess I should have.

I am beginning to wonder if that was causing the death of coral reefs near Townsville when I was there about 35 years ago. The coral was dying and a 'crown-of thorns' starfish was invading the dying reefs. At that time, anyway, there was a similar loss of fertilizer, as well as top-soil, More...
