Australian prices sound ridiculously low compared to California. Median house price in Santa Clara County for 2006 was $735K. Starter condos are around $315K. All those Google millionaires push up the prices. We are having to build low-cost housing for teachers. Pretty sad, really.

Martha - I wonder how prices compare in relation to average incomes? This is probably the only way you can really judge affordability. Not that I know the answer myself, though. One of the advantages of living outside the big cities is that houses are more affordable. The lifestyle is so much better too, of course, but you have to live where life and work take you.

Back from my holidays - never got to see Roger Federer and saw the Aussie players crash and burn but saw some brilliant tennis players like Gonzalez - who has an amazing forehand.

Judy: I'm not convinced that the salary differential drives the housing costs here. It's probably more to do with your comment about 'you have to live where the job takes you'. There are more jobs in the big cities and so more demand for housing and so prices are higher. Unfortunately, just because there are more jobs doesn't necessarily mean they pay more!
