Hi all,

Back a bit, Steve blogged a very interesting solution to the Sep 2 Tough. It was great, but I kept wondering whether the puzzle itself was susceptible to a solution by tools accessible to lesser mortals.

Anyway, I couldn’t stop wondering, so I worked on it and found one, More...

1. Unique possibilities to 28.
2. If c5=6=a2=i8,a5=2,a3=1,g3=5,i3=4,pair 45 at g45,and 16 have no place in right middle box.So c5=2.UPs to 30.
3. If c6=6=a2,c1=1,a3=2,a7=4,a8=8;no candidate at a5.So c6=1.UP33.
4. If a7=2,h7=1,i7=3,i8=8;no candidate at a8.So a7=4.UP34.
5. If b9=8,a8=2,a3=1,i3=4,i5=8,a5=6.Also a8=8 makes a5=6.UP81.

I did not have the problem Alfred found with c5=6. I even entered 6, just to see where it would lead, but I never had a problem with no candidate at a5.
The matching wrong choice for a5 was 2. In fact, everything looked just fine in several boxes, though I did not pursue it all the way to get to a different impasse. I just acknowledged c5 was not a 6 and looked for other solutions.

This just about fell into my lap and I thought it was short and interesting enough to post. (Assuming it passes Alfred’s eagle eye! :-) )

1. a3=1 or a3=2.
If a3=1, *c6=1, g3=5, i3=4 (& gi5=68), g4=1, h4=4, b4=8, so a7=b9=24 & *a8=8, *c5=2, *c9=9, & *c1=6.
If More...

Hi Brenda.I think you have discovered a very neat and original solution.If you count UP28 as step 1,you have condensed this down to a 3 step solution.Very impressive.
Regards,Alfred.

Thanks Fred!

My UP28 was b5=7 and it was because since the 7 had to be in the bottom row in the middle box it had to be in the middle row in the abc456 box. (My UP 27 was c7=7.) I considered that just SSTs.

And since the step(s?) was all based on the premise a3=1 or 2, I considered that a single step.

Regards,
Brenda

Ooops, sorry, Alfred and All,

UPs to . . . etc. is indeed a first step.

But I still cling to my second point :-) .

Brenda

1.SST to UP=28
2.{(2=4)a7-a5=hi5-h4=(45')h14-(168')gh1i2=(1)gi3-(1=2)a3}
=> a258<>2,a6<>4,d3<>1 UP=32
3.(1=6)c6-c5=(69')a26 => a6<>1 UP=81
