Fijords? Looks a little chilly, but beautiful.

This seemed easier than the hard. No guessing.

Quick proof. Given 23. Standard procedures produce b6=2, f3=4, b2=5, a3=3, g3=2, h1=7, h3=9. Now f9=78. If 8, then, e9=7, e8=2, a9=2, b9=9, b7=3, and no place for 3 in Box E8. Therefore f9=7, d5=7, e2=7, and the rest is easy. UP 81

Rich - one of these days I'm going to have to learn how to interpret your quick proof! I solved it, but probably no where near as "quickly" as yourself :) Does anyone know this locale? Looks partly cloudy, winds at least in the teens & a bit cold (for a Floridian) but very beautiful. Wonder how the fishing is there?

New Sudoku player. I get Rich's proof, but I wonder if there's a means to do this without the 'trial & error' part? Is there a technique I'm missing? I was lost on finding anything to definitively determine whether 7 or 8 goes in F9.

Rich, I can follow your solution, but how did you know to focus on the 78 in f9 rather than on any of the other pairs? It's probably one of those "math/number mind" things. I like the challenge of the tough puzzle, but I almost always end up guessing.

By the way, beautiful scene and photo.

Can anyone explain to me what is the difference between a guess and following a chain to either proove or eliminate a number from a box. Some say they have guesses, but one person's guess maybe another person's technique.

Liaya.

I forgot to set the timer...again, but it didn't seem to take very long. I must admit, I do not understand one thing about the proofs! I just do 'em the way I do 'em!

mAen! 22:47 IIRC this is one of the beautiful scenes from NZ (South Island?)

Athur! I share your feeling. To me it seems that "a forbidding chain of length, say longer than 6 links", is more or less the same thing as a "guess that leads to a contradiction in 6 steps". I More...
