Here, we have a blizzard and a temperature of about -10 C just now. The fish pond freezes over every night and I break the ice (I wonder if that is the right thing to do for the poor fish underneath).
Plum ???
Completely immerse hand in warm water with a capful of antispetic until the gauze loosens??

CLEAN CAN BE FUN

One day, a man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in a very Sexy nightie.
'Tie me up,' she purred, 'and you can do anything you want.'
So he tied her up and went golfing.

Oh, Plum I wish I knew. But if it were me looking at this, I'd be in the car with her heading for the emergency room! I get very squeamish at the sight of blood!

Rayray - if the pond is deep enough, the fish will find and be safe in the lowest area. Water is densest at about a degree C above freezing, so the deepest water will avoid freezing longest unless it looses heat. The ice is acting as a bit of insulation, so don't keep breaking it.

I hadn't yet seen the wound yesterday and I asked her if she needed stitches. She said, "I don't think there's enough meat there to hold the stitches. That's why I have gray hair.

Plum, you might try a warm, wet compress. Leave it on for awhile. Maybe coat the whole thing with baby oil or Vaseline and let it soften. Moisten with a normal saline solution. Be patient. This happened to my daughter once and it took quite awhile. I tried all the above and it finally came off.

You might want to use a butterfly bandage when you get the gauze off.

Rayray, the sound-waves caused by you breaking the ice can kill the fish. They survive well in a deep pond, but if it is shallow float a ball or similar on the pond that you can lift off during the day but beware - a friends cat used to sit beside the hole in her pond ice and flip out the fish when they came up for air - and those Koi were expensive to replace.

Another thing we used to do is boil some water in a saucepan and just stand the pan on the ice it will soon melt through and not cause the fish a headache

Rayray, shosho and Kathy, all good advice for Plum. I think the best might be to accept that it's serious enough to seek professional help.

Well, she's soaking in hydrogen peroxide now per advice I got in a pm.

Daplap, I think Tiger Woods is living proof of what God told Adam!
Plum, was there some reason you did not want to put the antibiotic ointment on the wound itself rather than on the bandage? Once the gauze gets unstuck (peroxide should work fine) you can buy telfa (non-stick) sterile pads to cover the wound rather than using gauze.

Plum,
I asked someone who has medical experience further about the injured hand.
Immersing in water is fine - but add some salt to make it saline (rather than antiseptic) - th e addition of salt may free the gauze more easily.

Plum & GMo,
Thanks for your brilliant suggestions about the pond. I don't have to go out and 'break the ice' !

Plum, You don't say how deep or long this wound actually is, but you may have to bite the bullet and pull the gauze off. Then I would suggest if you don't want to seek medical help, ask a pharmacist about dressings. They make some pretty neat stuff that is complete impregnated with ointment and also there is tegaderm. All a little spendy, but very useful in certain situations.

Only 3 answers to yesterday's puzzle.

A family has 3 bikes, 2 cars, 4 wagons, and 1 unicycle. How many wheels are there altogether?

The answer I had was 33 (including 2 steering wheels)
BUT, it was pointed out that there could have also been 2 spare tires, making it 35.

We used epsom salt then table salt then hydrogen peroxide. Thanks for the update about refreshing the peroxide soak when it ceases to foam. We're applying fresh now.

I had quickly in my head come up with 31, determined it was too easy so no doubt wrong. I might have known there's be something like steering wheels involved.

Kathy - the nerve ends are very raw, so instead of directly touching the wound I applied a big glob of the ointment to the gauze that was laid directly over the bleeding area. My pediatrician taught me that trick. It's always worked until now. But I've usually used the non-stick gauze.

I'm with you, Keith. I had exactly the same response to Kathy's weekend puzzle. Well, Starr is going to soak in fresh hydrogen peroxide for another 10-15 minutes, and then she is going to shampoo her hair the best she can. If it's still sticking after than, we'll rip it off and apply an appropriate dressing this time. Thanks everyone. I'm logging off.

Plum, I would be cautious about using a pantyliner if it was of the scented variety.

The cold in FL has reached all the way to Key West now! I am hearing reports that this is the coldest spell in our state since 1892!
Hope the owner of this kitchen will identify him/her self soon. It's not mine, but brings back lots of painful memories of the very messy & inconvenient process of transformation! Am certainly enjoying the results, though.

Rayray, GannieMo is correct. You DO NOT want to break the ice in your pond, however I heard that it deafens the fish. Deafen or deaden, whatever, - just don't, I guess!

Rayray, you will also need a bubbler end for the end of the hose. It's called an 'air stone' - a plug with air holes that fits into the hose.
