Hi all. Very interested to hear all the California notes today. I am coming to USA in about 3 weeks time for a six week holiday. Do I need a rain-coat? Am I going to freeze? I have never even SEEN snow! Our first stop is San Francisco then Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, New York etc. Any good More...

debbie, we drive on the right side of the road here in the States. I can't speak for the rest of the U.S., but generally the weather is very pleasant in mid-October in northern California, although San Francisco is generally a bit cooler and sometimes foggy. Our rains don't usually start More...

I wrote this straight after the other comment and just got back into the office and realised it hadn't been submitted because it had automatically logged me off, so no little birds.

Angie: Congratulations to Emilie. The grade is great - but what she has learned from the project may be more beneficial in the end.

Linda: obviously, you've never driven in Boston.

Linda:
If you drive on the right side of the road in the States, then you are driving on the wrong side. Were you to drive on the left side it would be the right side, thus resolving a binary problem. If, in fact, you drive on the left side, your right arm is ready for any oncoming eventuality, More...

I posted this a while ago...

I did a lot of business entertaining when I lived just north of San Francisco (Mill Valley).

Depending on how much time my guests/clients had, I would schedule various tours. If all you've got is a couple of hours, you can visit Muir Woods, just over More...

Perhaps all Americans are left handed - or at least left-armed.
21/Sep/07 1:23 PM

If they are left armed, then perhaps it is time their arms were taken away from them; although amputation can be traumatic

ROSEMARY, you are very, very bad! I can't believe that you even KNOW about that! ROFL, big time!
Forgive her, DEBBIE, she knows not what she does ... Have a great trip to the States, and drive anywhere you want!

Debbie - you may want to ask Dave (OR/AZ) about Arizona in mid-October to mid-November. Around Flagstaff (Grand Canyon) - you could get snow. When in that area consider a drive down Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona.

I personally prefer Tahoe to Las Vegas, because of the scenery. However there More...

Oh, yes...and when you're touring New York City, you can purchase a small, dignified handgun (with the serial number filed off) in Hunt's Point between the hours of 2:00am and 6:00am. It will serve you well in the event that you encounter any of New York's unofficial "greeters."

Linda - Rayray is trying to confuse you. We do drive on the right side of the road. The driver sits on the left side of the road - unless driving a postal truck & delivering mail. In otherwords our steering wheel is on the left side. With an automatic, you don't have to worry about shifting More...

Debbie:
That last post was for you.

Ian had some good suggestions. Calif 1 is a beautiful and memorable drive (if someone else is driving). Ian- I spent my honeymoon over 45 years ago in Cambria (it has grown) - if you go there do go to San Simeon (Hearst Castle).

Sorry Judy - I was referring to the word "vex" because I'm getting so annoyed with this reference to poor little magpies by someone who shall remain anonymous..

Debbie if you get confused in your driving in the states you can always do what I do--I drive in the middle of the road. I do not recommend doing this on the Interstate though people tend to get a little testee but kind enough to use sign language to tell you where to go.

21/Sep/07 1:57 PM
 |  |

Karen - at least on an Interstate - the traffic is all going the same direction.

Thanks everyone! Now I have to tell you there is no chance that I'll be driving, so you can breathe easy! It will be planes and tour coaches(buses) etc all the way! I have heard that you have excellent roads there. I hope we can follow some of your suggestions, thanks again for them. Ian I love More...

Karen, I thought about middle of the road, but NAH! But I bet we Aussies speak the same sign language as you Americans. I am hoping to learn some new language variations. Regional accents and vernacular really fascinates me. We will experience big differences I suppose between New Orleans an New York for instance.

Ian - My husband ran the Boston Marathon quite a few years ago, so we took a family trip east and did drive in Boston. YIKES!! is all I have to say...

Eve:
In UK, when driving, we do not usually sit on the left side of the road unless we are blind drunk: it is quite dangerous; especially near the closing time of pubs, which varies in time. I agree that if you have blinkers you do not need to stick your arms out, because you cannot see when you More...

ANNE, I have no idea what you're talking about! I was referring to Rosemary's dubious taste in movies ... what are YOU talking about? :)

Rayray: LOL ROFL On many busy roads we have a center lane from which left turns are made, and people enter the road way from the left and wait for a chance to get into the flow of traffic on the right. These lanes are in the middle and called suiside lanes. They are not to be used to slow down More...

Debbie: go ahead and get a car, just take your time and avoid commuter traffic during commuter hours. The rest of the time, it's easy. If you confine yourself to cabs and tour buses, all you'll see (and experience) is the same as what you'd get from a video tour, and the route I proposed is utterly unavailable. If I can drive in England, you can drive in the US.

and if you can drive in India you can drive anywhere in this planet..I did so!! no worries Debbie..just carry on..
