Dorothea, I sympathize with you. I am trying to untangle the instructions for my new mobile phone. Took me ages to work out how it sends an SMS.

Rosemary - I find it very hard too as I'm going away so I don't bother with the tree or decorations. I'm also not doing much Christmas present shopping as I'm buying for my Grandchildren in OZ when I go to NZ and they will be visiting me shortly after I return from NZ.

Greg, no cheating and checking in that Aussie translation book.

So What's to translate Anne?
CynB already told everyone what a Ute is.
Surely by now everyone knows an eskie is a cooler full of beer.
A Kelpie is a sheep dog, and we have heard that expression many times before.
A swaggie is a hitch hiker (don't see many of them anymore around More...

Not bad for starters Greg, now how about the rest of it!

Yes, Rosemary, I am getting excited but now that I'm working full-time and feeling a bit tired sometimes, I'm also thinking what a chore with all that flying, although it's only a few hours, then change planes at Auckland.

Anne, you are a hard task mistrees. If people can't understand the rest of it, have them send a question in to their local radio/television station and we can have a global understanding of the song!

Anne, lucky the song didn't include a "slab" or a "tinnie"!

This is a new version of an old poem that has been going around for quite a long time. But it's truly beautiful. Remember those who have fought to keep us free, who have died for us, eventually come home to us (some coming home only to be buried, never again to be held in the arms of those that More...

Okay CynB, you got me. I know several meanings of "tinnie" (canned food, getting high using tin foil, etc.). Define slab for me please. That's a new one on me.

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue.. an More...

Sorry about the poem being cutin half. Canuk Greg a slab is a box of beer in tins, sometimes 30 tins and sometimes 24. A tinnie is one of those tins of beer. The slabs are sold from the cold room of a liqour outlet so the beer can be consumed straight away.
05/Dec/07 10:45 AM
 |  |

CG, A slab is a flat carton of stubbies. Stubbies are cans of beer.
05/Dec/07 10:47 AM
 |  |

stubbies and tinnies are the same thing. Mind you, there may be a difference in the language spoken between eastern and Western Australia. Here they are stubbies, but I'm not sure how extensive 'here' is.
05/Dec/07 10:50 AM
 |  |

Go on, Greg, you can manage it.
Off to work now. Bye all!
05/Dec/07 10:50 AM
 |  |

Dino, we don't have stubbies here in Canada. We drink hearty, and have big ones instead! Thanks for explaiining a "slab" though.
05/Dec/07 10:52 AM
 |  |

Guess I was wrong about 'tinnies' as well.
05/Dec/07 10:56 AM
 |  |

Agree with definition of slab BUT a tinnie can be a can of beer or a small aluminium fishing dinghy, and ute owners who like fishing attach the tinnie to the towbar of the ute most weekends and off they go to their favourite boat ramp. They used to take slabs with them but now it's, of course, illegal to drink and drive/steer a boat.

Just back to fishermen and their tinnies - the following was on a china ashtray given to us many years ago:
Behold the fisherman
He riseth up early in the morning and disturbeth the whole household.
Mighty are his preparations.
He goeth forth full of hope and when the day is spent he returneth smelling of strong drink and the truth is not in him.

CG - Your hearty drink of beer is called a "tallie" in QLD. You can buy tallies by the dozen box or packed in 3s at the local bottleshop.
A stubby is a glass bottle (375ml or there abouts).
05/Dec/07 11:33 AM

Victoria, My late Dad's beer consumption for the year consisted of 2 tallies bought at Christmas and shared with my uncle and Grandfather on Christmas day!

Doesn't a Darwin stubbie hold about a gallon? I have seen lots of 'tinnies' on the roofs of 4 wheel drives on their way to fishing spots.

especially for the children:

The new u-tube is SNOOPY vs. the RED BARON from a Snoopy Christmas Special.

If you want to enlarge a video to full screen. Just after the video starts playing, click on the screen. This will take you to the You-tube video site, now click on the far right button at bottom of screen to enlarge to full screen. When through, hit escape and then close You-tube and you will be back to where you started.

here a large bottle of beer is known as a 'long neck' and a darwin stubbie is approx 2 long necks.
think we like to confuse everyone.
tinnies are usually small aluminium boats but could be a can of beer. stubbies are small bottles of beer but could be a brand of shorts.

Seems like you Aussies take your beer consumption sreiously. Stuubies, tinnies, tallies, long necks, Darwin stubbies, whatever. Just give me a cold beer please!

Greg, Christmas joke was the best I have heard in a long time. Good thing I use a star, will not be able to look at an angel again.

Hey Greg, looking at your typos in your post above, I think you've been taking your beer drinking seriously too, just before you typed it.

Ok, got the children to play Jingle Bells on the recorders. Out of 37 players, I think half know the music well, can just barely recognize the tune! The other half barely know which fingers to cover which hole for each note. It's hilarious, by the time they've figured out how to play the note More...
