The Romans sure knew how to build things to last. Can you imagine anything built now lasting so well in 2000 years? Besides this being an engineering marvel.

The Rome water supply still comes from aqueducts - but of modern construction and about 50% of the water is lost along the way. This leaves much of the south with water shortages especially in the summer - an age-old problem. But Italian politics are what they are...

Helen - I'm so glad you posted that comment. I knew that sometimes ancient aquaducts still carry water, but I wouldn't have thought that such inefficient modern aquaducts were being built in the face of current water demands.

Aileen - I have a slab of ribs I should be doing something with right now and I'm just too lazy. I think I will let hubby prepare them when he gets home from taking a couple of our girls to the movies -- 4 July is one of the few days he gets to take the girls out anywhere for the day because of his work schedule.

should amend that -- he has weekends, of course, but has made it a tradition to take them out for certain on 4 July, which is usually a week day.

Went to an old-fashioned township picnic today. Our township is celebrating it's 175th anniversary this year. (That's old for the US!) Old cars & tractors, a tug-o-war, hotdogs, homemade fruit preserves, breads & honey for sale... Pure Americana!

I hope you have all enjoyed July 4th. Friends called us at 18.30 and said pop rond for a drink........and here we are at 23.20 home and not having had much to drink for 2 weeks I need my bed..... but I learnt a lot about today and why you celebrate Goodnight all "à demain"

I'm up and fine on a beautiful Canberra winter day - sunny and clear outside, but probably only 10C.

It's amazing what about 15 hours of sleep over yesterday and last night has done in restoring me to normal humour! Mr P is saying I was very grumpy yesterday (who me? , grumpy ? - never!!!).

Mind you - he started it! Fancy asking me whether such and such was when I was just barely holding my eyelids open - AND it wasn't urgent!!!! -

Today is a better day! Not ribs and BBQ for us - but roast lamb dinner tonight, with Apple Pie as a 4th tribute!

I need to say that I especially liked two recent photographs - (1)the view from underneath the 'Eiffel Tower' and (2) the 'Aquaduct'.
The former was a masterpiece composition of intersting symmetry, and the latter was a nice picture of a subject of great interest.
