Time to get on to other things - cleaning up a room full of boxes that came home from school in May, for instance.
In case you want to continue, Ian, I will concede defeat on whatever grounds wish me to.

Jamie, there is no school today. Labor Day is a public holiday. It is one of the perks of being a teacher that I really look forward to. In my former life, I worked in retail and worked all the holidays. I ended up grading papers today so I don't think I can classify it as a "holiday."

Usually by the time I arrive in the afternoon (Oz Time) everyone's in bed. Why is it Math in the US and Maths in Australia.

For the same reason that it's "taken to hospital" vs. "taken to the hospital."

Ah, but what is (I think), an American idiom, is the difference between "went to church" vs. "went to the church."

and both different from "went to a church."

Re hospitals either would be okay in Australia. Generally you would use the definite article when you meant a specific hospital - say there was only one in a town. You would leave the definite article out when you had no idea of which hospital.

More boredom.
went to church = someone who is a churchgoer
went to the church = made a visit to a specific church
went to a church = visited a church somewhere sometime perhaps only once ever.

I worked in Local Government for many years and we always had difficulty with the word Council. Even the legislation was imprecise. When it is said the Council did this or that, do people mean the corporate body or alternatively the elected officials. Many decisions are made by the "Council" under legislation that the elected members never even know about.

Now to plot my year. After story, songs and hugs and kisses and all tucked into bed, I finally told my half asleep husband Happy Anniversary.

His response, not good, was, is it today!

Hmm, Karen - doesn't sound good. You mean your MIL also didn't remember? Didn't you say she was going to be there for dinner? Sounds genetic, maybe, not just a masculine problem.
For whatever reason he forgot, I am sorry.

Thanks Jamie. I just get to turn his world upside down for a very long time. Life's simple pleasures.
As for MIL, she cannot remember my name, I do not expect her to remember a date. Besides, this was Man's and my day. I will give him credit that he has remember 3 out of 20. Next, is my birthday. Oh boy, I cannot wait.

Your husband should be married to my wife. Then they could each forget all important dates and nobody would be any the wiser.

She cannot remember any of her siblings birthdays, she knows the dates but never remembers our children's birthdays and at times I think she doesn't remember she's married let alone the date or year. 19/12/76.

Hubby and I have both been known to forget our anniversary.
I forgot my own birthday once but I was on the Sunlander travelling to Cairns. I only remembered when I saw some children in a school and commented on it being the first day of the new school year. Click! Oh, it's my birthday More...

I would dearly love to forget my birthday, but friends have invited us over for dinner the night before, my tennis buddies are taking me to lunch on my birthday, and my hubby is taking me out that night. Besides the 3 reminders that I'm getting older, I'm also going to be eating too much. Next year I think I'll just disappear for a few days!!!

Saylz and Victoria thanks for the stories.
Saylz I was 8 years old and 1 day when you got married.
Victoria, my 16th birthday was forgotten. My brother came home that day from his first over seas tour.
I am looking forward to weeks and weeks of pampering. Not that he does not do that now.

Victoria, I forgot mine once. We had stayed over a couple of nights along the Swan River outside Perth,WA.The proprietor asked that we sign the visitors book before leaving. I casually said OK, what is the date? Et voila - thought it sounded familiar.
