Not far from where I live is an old abandoned settlement with nothing left but a few stones to show where a wall or foundation stone might have supported a structure. One thing that reminds us that civilization once tried to gain a foothold there is that every spring and summer the irises that were planted by the homesteaders in the 1870's still bloom.

That's really cool, Jeb. Could the ruins remain from homesteaders, who tried fruitlessly to eke out a living from the land ... or were brutally murdered, mutilated, and burned by Indians?

Poor planning and poor choice of land. The community at one time had a post office, two one room schools and a grind stone factory. The railroad left them to wither. The local indians left them pretty much alone. The land has since turned all to post oak and hickory.
