Is that a caterpiller standing on it's tail?

OK. It took me 9 minutes. Now tell me what I'm looking at!

Dorthea,
Yes. Aren't you familiar with the North American Ostrich Caterpillar?

Correction. I should have said, "Yes and no." Obviously, as it's name implies, the Ostrich Caterpillar does not stand on its tail but, rather, on its head.

Recommendation: This photo should be forwarded to the Society of the Study of Rare and Unusual North American Lepidopterans. I believe the majority of that Society accepts the once scoff-at opinion that the Ostrich Caterpillar stands on its head due to a primitive "belief" it becomes invisible to its prey. This photo certainly lends credance to the theory.

A new photo? I don't remember it coming up before. Looking at the shadows, I'm guessing early morning. The quail are difficult to see among the patches of light and shade, nature's protection, I suppose.

So glad the Ostrich Caterpiller has been identified! lol
VERY good camouflage on the quails!

5:22. It looks more like the tail of a (very thin) crocodile sticking up with, like an iceberg, 2/3 of it invisible below the surface.

A different picture today. Hooray!

I'm cornfused. Sounds like a quail- oops' whale of a tail/tale. Is the ostrich-caterpillar spinning that tale? I see threads.

Go Bruins! Beat those Sun Devils that make it impossible to see the Quail.

Just got back from a walk and my pup really would have liked to chase the covey(?) of quail we happened upon. No ostrich caterpillars to be seen, however. A pity!

Yes, Chris, the North American Ostrich Caterpillar is often confused with the American Midwest Sand Diving Crocodile. And while I have no independent confirmation from the Society of the Study of Rare and Unusual North American Lepidopterans, I am relatively sure we are seeing the former.

6:47 - looks kind of like a cactus to me.

Another one of my pics from Tucson. It was fun to see these quail in the backyard, but they scurried so quickly that it was hard to take a photo. But when they hold still, they are even more difficult to see. Must be because the North American Ostrich Caterpillar confused them.

Maen! 5:07 Lovely setting! IIRC the political cartoonists in the U.S. had a field day (late 1980s) at the expense of a certain 'respected' Hoosier senator, when the presidential candidate (at that time) GHWB took a day off, and went hunting for quails. The poor VP candidate was prime material anyway.

Jyrki (great name!),
And Dick Cheney apparently thought he was shooting a quail (flashbacks?) when he shot his lawyer friend in the face.
