How incredibly blue the sky is! This is a really nice, calming picture. One of Anne's?

Have a great day/night everyone.

This was taken when I drove home from Perth last time and as you can see, it was very dry. There could have been a crop in there which was harvested.

As soon as I saw the caption, I guessed this as one of Anne's photos. I feel like I know a bit of where she lives because of how well she has captured the countryside.

Anne, in all of your photos that I can remember, out in the country the grass is straw colored. Don't you have a time when it's green? Can livestock live on this? I know Oz is arid, but don't you have a monsoon season or something? Finding this site has certainly been a revelation and education More...

6:19; pretty site/sight from a distance, I know I won't enjoy standing there one bit. Raining in N. California, enjoying the fresh green on the trees and the muddy smell of early showers.

Ruby - this photo was taken in summer. This paddock will soon be very green as will all the countryside around it and it will look a totally different sight altogether. I LOVE A SUNBURNT COUNTRY
by Dorothea McKellar (written in 1906)

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded Lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens,
Is running in your veins;
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft, dim skies -

I think most of us Aussies learnt this song at school years ago. I doubt if they would teach it to the children of today, unfortunately. I hope you enjoy it.

It's a long time since I've seen most of the verses Anne and I got goose bumps reading it!
Thanks for the memories...

Yes Anne, learn't 'Ilove a Sunburnt Country' at Primary School. used to sing the chorus (still know the words and tune), along with the National Anthem (God save the Queen) at each weekly Asembley (which was held in the Quadrangle - do schools still have and call it Quadrangle??)

Thanks for quoting this Anne! I learnt it at school and have always loved it - the imagery is just beautiful. I think it would have made a great national anthem - at least some of us would have known the words! ;)

Anne, I love your sunburnt photo and everything that goes with it, particularly the poem.
Did you know that Isobel Marion Dorothea MacKellar OBE died in 1968 and is buried in Waverley Cemetery, Sydney on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. It is a lovely spot and I have a photo of her headstone if you are at all interested.

I love nature specially the greens. It is soothing to the eyes and very relaxing specially for someone who come from a country with a long summer.

Anne thank you for including 'I Love a Sunburnt Country'. I'm sorry to say I can no longer recite it by heart - can you? I though age was meant to affect more recent memories - not dim the lore of childhood but there you go!
In reply to Ruby we do have monsoons but they are up the top end. More...

Hello rj - I've never seen you on the site before but nice to see you commenting. No, I can't recite all the above poem anymore, but perhaps this may be an incentive to re-learn it.
Ian - I would love to see the photo, please.

A friend of mine who spent several years working in Wisconsin, USA, commented that one of the differences he'd noticed was that in Australia (in our part of it, at least), summer is a dry, brown season and winter is green, whereas in the US summer is green and winter is brown (and often white) because the trees have lost their leaves

Yeah I learnt that poem at school too. They don't teach it anymore at school according to my ten year old niece who is staying here at the mome for school holidays.

That is a great poem Anne. I'm surprised to see so many people were taught it at school. And it does sound like it should be a national anthem!

Anne, I have always loved that poem, since reciting it for a school project. Thank you for reminding me of it, especially at times like these.
