Jude and Andre': the main purpose of covering the bridge was to protect the structural members of the bridge, therefore extending its life. It also served as protection for travelers during bad weather.

Hal, they were also called "kissing bridges"! I suppose they offered a little privacy for the Amish sweethearts. I think PA. has the largest number in the U.S. I know Lancaster County has many. A drive through Lancaster in the Fall is spectacular and you do meet horse and buggies on the bridges Lovely!

So right, Kathy! This is not my picture, and I don't recognize this particular bridge, but there are many covered bridges in our neck of the woods. I love the heritage they breathe!

There is a great short love story called the Bridges of Madison County, I would recommend it, was also made into a movie, be forwarned it is a tear jerker.

Andre, I would also like to say that I liked your you tube selection, who is the artist?

maen all! vermont is still the king of covered bridges with hundreds still in use on the side roads. the main reason for covering them was to keep the ice and snow from rendering them impassable in the harsh winter weather. great places to break-out your metal detectors for old coins and general hardware of a bygone era.

I love those bridges. Nothing like them in Australia!

Rosemary: they don't. The covered bridges are generally too small for anything larger than a Hummer. Most, if not all, of these bridges were built 80 to 90 years ago; long before the big rigs.

7.06 I never read that book, 'The Bridges of Madison County'. Is it a good book? I have always liked the look of the covered bridges. Why are they covered?
Read the comments, thanks Hal and deltz.
And thank you Ame, I love a good tear-jerker. Will be sure to look out for the book, then watch the movie with Clint!

6:31 Like Sudoku players these bridge builders had plenty of spare time on their hands. As an engineer I don't understand putting more weight on a tiny bridge, obviously it is way over designed for it to last 80 to 90 years, unlike what has been built since then.
