I just read that the Golden Spike ceremony took place 35 miles away, but that this was the "legal site" of the completion because parallel grades were laid by crews who each wanted to claim the rewards that came with laying grade to be used. The Golden Spike(s) (maybe there were More...

Finally! A place I have been to. At the "official" site, there are replicas of the two locomotives which met head to head in the ceremony which has been perpetuated in a famous painting.

This photo is actually from one of the parallel tracks, not far from the site of the ceremony. I chose this spot because it showed the rugged terrain and stark topography at this northern end of the Great Salt Lake. I have a great deal of admiration for the Chinese and Irish building crews that were able to lay those tracks through such daunting challenges!
