'We're having a heat wave...' (who wrote/sang that song?) A good place to escape the heat: go to a MOVIE. Recommend the new Johnny Depp Pirates of the Carribean film. As always, he's fantabulous. Now, you MUST sit through the credits -- there's a surprise at the end. Not to be missed!!

There is a essay from the New York Times Magazine dated Jan. 19 1997 by Gregory Curtis titled 'Leave Ozzie and Harriet Alone: A defense of the drama of the quotidian life.' Google Ozzie and Harriet, it should be the first choice. It is an interview and road trip to the old Nelson house with David Nelson. You will find it to be well worth reading. I was a fan of 'Ozzie and Harriet' myself.

Yes, Celia, 3pete foreshadowing. Have you heard that Keith Richards is going to play Johnny's father in the next one. I think that's too funny.

Okay, I'm addicted!

For the summer? I enjoy Mammoth, did a reunion with college roomies there - so you're missing the heat! I don't linger, but will try to check in more. My husband's on the 'puter more than I. We're keeping you company, hunh? Are you doing hiking, I loved a hike we took up to a lake there - city girls and veteran hikers both.
 |  |
Judy-Where is Mammoth? I've heard of it. I was at Yosemite on July 3rd. Got to see the top part but didn't make it to the REALLY beautiful south end. I can't wait to go back. Feels like unfinished business. Today's agenda is very open. Stretching these last few days before I have to go back to work!!!

JUDY from San Diego: FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS: life is short. Go to Macchu Picchu! I enjoy reading your posts and have come to like you a lot. I have cousins and friends in CA; visited SF once upon a time and have always wanted to visit SD. When I make it out there again, would love to join in a sudoku-get-together with y'all from out there!

NAN: A response ... I'm psyched! We hike daily and can't get enough of the natural beauty. That's so funny about college reunions ... I get together every year or two with my three best friends from college (Michigan) ... this year was in North Carolina. It's my turn next, and we will have our gathering here at Mammoth!

JAMIE Thanks and I know a lot of people think it is hard, and it is sometimes but I love what I do--I think that is the trick to being happy. I love having summers off too----do need a break once and a while!
This site has been a fun discovery, just wondering if I am going to have the time to More...

3:06 Hi to all. Another breathtaking day!

Thought for the Day:

I live for today..... I'm just a day behind !!

To JEB from KS -- thanks! Will do.
To KEITH from CA -- yes (re Keith Richards playing Jack Sparrow's father) -- too perfect, I can hardly wait! I hope JD gets recognized for his superb acting skills with an Oscar (for what it's worth) -- here's one actor who becomes his character and not a More...

BARBARA: I can't believe that you were that close and didn't drop by!! Yosemite is about 18 miles from Mammoth, as the crow flies, longer by road. It is south of Yosemite, off the same highway. You MUST visit next time you're in the area! Savor every minute of your vacation!
 |  |
Wow, CELIA, you have made MY day! I'm glad that you have come out of the closet (oops ... bad illustration) to begin posting. You are a wonderful addition to our early morning (for me) postings! Yes, please visit either here or in San Diego. I'd love to meet you! Are there other Sudokuists in San Diego County other than Nan and me? DAVE could return ... we'd all like to meet HIM! :)

Out of the closet could be fun.....

JUDY: Are you somewhere near Sequoia Nat'l Park? That is one of my favorite places!

to KATHY from Valrico: missed your postings whilst you were off traipsing around Europe. Wanted to thank you again for your encouraging words re losing an old tree -- my Mom (Largo) has had the rotting old live oak removed, cranes and lots of money, misses the shade--house (and car) is now much More...

'We're having a heat wave' - Irving Berlin. It seems Marilyn Monroe sang it, but my fave is Ella Fitzgerald.

MIKE: Got out the map again ... Mammoth is about 100 miles north of Sequoia. Sequoia is just beautiful ... my kids went to church camp there every year and loved the experience. The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California provide an excellent diversion for the 'flatlanders' of the state!
 |  |
JUDY: My son and I spent a day at Sequoia about 12 years ago, then went to Yosemite the next day. We loved Sequoia, but couldn't get out of Yosemite fast enough as it was nothing but a traffic jam! Would love to try Yosemite again in the fall when there aren't as many people.

We are all talking of excessive heat. I feel we are lucky - the news from Java now is more than 400 dead and many more injured including tourists of many nationalities, after underwater earthquake 7.7 and following tsunami. Many thousands homeless. This is their 3rd major disaster this year.

So Ian moved to 'hard' so he can continue to be first...too much competition on 'easy' for him! Don't give up so quick Ian...work for it on easy.

Good Maen all.

Suz fr: MD happy birthday to your son Isaac 14 today hope he has a good one.♪♪♪♪♪

Rola fr: Perth happy 17th birthday to your son also may he have a wonderful day.♪♪♪♪♪

MIKE: Then you passed right by Mammoth, in between Sequoia and Yosemite! They are both beautiful and worthy of visits, but we prefer our solitude here where there are NEVER crowds! Mammoth itself can become congested, but we huddle up here in the trees above the town, away from the maddening More...

Kim, I agree with not having nearly as much time to read/post during the school year. I am lucky to get to this site three times a week then, and that is usually late at night for a few minutes.
Savor the summers.

Mammoth is our favorite area as a base camp for backpacks. We love Sequoia, too. I looked for photos from Sequoia to post on this site, but those trees are just so hard to capture on film. Haven't been to Yosemite in years, except to drive through Tioga Pass on the way to Mammoth. We avoid the More...

JUDY: I'm much more likely to see you in San Diego. I spent the winter there this year, working as a consultant for a company in Rancho Bernardo. Loved the moderate climate, but don't know how anyone can afford to move into that area - the house prices took my breath away! Unfortunately, right More...

My stew is stewing! off to wash sheets! I don't mind washing them it is the putting the sheets back on the bed that I don't care for. My tractor and horses are looking at me through the window, might need to go and ride while the sheets are washing---maybe the guests should make their own beds! Gee More...

There were more posts on hard yesterday than I have ever seen and today there are quite a few to IAN. I guess if after all this he doesn't at least tell us why he no longer wants to post here we will get the hint.
If you haven't sent him a post on hard maybe you can do it today or even if you posted yesterday do it again. We have to give it a try.

Good Tuesday Maen, all!

Have only been to Mammoth to ski in the winter (during my crazy college years), but enjoyed Sequoia (yes, difficult to photograph those gigantic redwoods) and Yosemite (am a waterfall fan) during the summer car trips with family.

I'm not trying to stir up anything, but I have a question, or rather want to take a survey, dealing with an issue that was important to my ex. If you have never posted to this site, here is an opportunity.

If you are a parent and your children are grown and not living at home, how often do More...

MARTHA: Go for it on Half Dome, Martha! You're only young once! We are too old for extended backpacking trips now, 60, but we do a two-day overnighter each summer. Last year we did Mammoth Crest to Deer Lakes and then down Duck Pass. This summer, we will begin above June Lakes, spend the night More...

MIKE FROM DAYTON: If you return to Rancho Bernardo, please contact us! We are only about 5 miles away!

WARREN I guess I am a grown child? How grown do you want for your survey? Most of us have some of our parents left.
My Mom died 7 years ago. I call my Dad once a week and try to visit once a month though sometimes it is once every two months.
My husband does not call his parents as often as More...
