This is a quote from todays Melbourne paper
"But former Indian consul general Mr TJ Rao said the recent attacks on Indian students had nothing to do with racism.

"This has nothing to do with racism, Australians are not racist people," Mr Rao said.

"I have More...

It was nice of Mr Rao to say Australians are not racist - most are not. I wish I could say none of us are. By the way, you posed an interesting idea earlier, saylz, when you suggested (perhaps ironically) all people return to the place of their birth. I would have to return to Canada, where I was More...

Personally I think this is an example of the xenophobia which seems to break out whenever economic conditions deteriorate. Less educated locals often of ethnic origins themselves, feel newcomers are stealing jobs etc. I doubt that Indians specifically are at any more risk than any other groups. More...

on a brighter note... we have a funny Australia Day tradition in our village - the India versus Australia cricket match(es). The locals form two teams (as I said yesterday we have a large population in this area who have an Indian heritage), and there is often a junior match as well as a senior More...

Couldn't agree more Saylz.
You have raised some very interesting points.
I have always found that this is a VERY interesting fact that people miss when they start bandying words like 'racist' about.

For those that are ignorant about Melbourne it is often described as 'a diverse and More...

Thanks Bean:
That is a most interesting, factual presentation. Clearly, your situation has rapidly changed during the past two decades, and has become very different from the UK. It would be entirely wrong of me to try to pass comment on Oz racism or not, because my experience is remotely More...

So - the population of Melbourne is just over 3 million?

The population of Melbourne as per 2006 census was 3.6M and Sydney 4.1M.

this is posted much after the fact but Bean you have said it very well, your post outlines extremely well the racial diversity in Melbourne and most of our large cities. the numbers since 2006 would show even more multi culturism. There are always going to be some issues in such diverse communities and to brand the whole country racist is totally unfair.
