Kate ,I know what you mean how people enter marriage and if things don't work out they just move on ,tho I don't know if staying is right for all but it sounds like your doing the right thing and should be commended,its hard when your married to someone who's ill,heck its hard enough when were healthy,til death do us part is not always an option but too many don't even try.

Kate - may I say from the point of view I am in - your husband is a very lucky man to have you in his life. What he suffers is made up by your love and support. I envy that of him. I hope, if his illness enables him to, he tells you he loves you often for your love and compassion.

Rose -after working in a nursing home I have a hard time answering that,no one wants to live anyplace but home (there home) and given a choice I never want to live with anyone but my spouse and hope that I die in my sleep before I need assistants.

Rosemary, I think the words 'with dignity' are paramount. I, too, was a nurse and spent time in a geriatric(horrible word) hospital. So much dignity is lost when you can no longer take care of yourself.
Just one point, if you know of someone who is in a home or hospital, give the place a call More...

Mo - a lovely thought that should be actioned. I observed for 2 weeks a patient at a hospice having no visitors and asked the nurse if they had no family. She said even the nurses had a problem spending time with this patient as he was so critical/negative/angry with life that he had driven family More...

such a great idea to visit the elderly with some easter eggs and a smile.
I just worry about lonely elderly folks being taken advantage of, preyed upon by people trying engraciate themselves in their lives for what they can get rewarded with at lifes end. It happens often.
