When I moved into my home, I had a large cycad (AKA Sago Palm, though not true palms)like this one in my back yard. An invading spider mite swept through south Florida about 6 years ago and killed nearly all of these which were not agressively treated with pesticides- something I would not do to save what is a beautiful plant, but itself is non-native in Florida.

maen all! nice palm. yeah, jim, i remember the mite infestation...we lost a few youngsters before our botanist neighbor gave us a simple cure...spray with plain old clorox...some yellowed but they came back nice and green.

Hi and Good Morning to All. I hate to say it but that photo is about two years old. Since then, the cycad has continued to flourish and it is now huge - completely dominating one corner of our garden. We bought another cycad to keep it company and it too, is putting on weight nicely. Must be something in the water.

Ssh Ian, don't get us started on the fluoride debate! Queenslanders are still iffy about it!

Ian, you are not the only one totally convinced of the benefits of flouride. You only have to look at the difference in the condition of teeth from a generation that did not have the benefit of flouride, to a generation who did.
