Way before my time, Hal! You must be older than dirt!

In truth, my paternal grandfather was the last trolley driver in the city of Detroit, and we have a newsclipping to prove it!

It was a sad day when the American city trolleys were replaced with polluting, noisy busses.
Bring 'em back!

Judy - If I am not mistaken, the Trolley use to run between Detroit and Pontiac. I believe that was in the early 1900's. I think it ran up Woodward Ave. Speaking of Woodward Ave....... The Dream Cruise is coming up soon. Does anyone out there remember cruisin' Woodward and Ted's?

I agree with you Shiela - that song will drive me nuts! We have a sort of trolly in the Cleveland area, but they're really busses in disguise.

10:39 Slow today. Hi to all. We call them trams here. Some of our cities are now re-instating trams as a better means of transport.

Actually, Debby, until the 1950's, the original trolleys ran all over the city of Detroit, even out into the suburbs. I remember skirting the tracks and wondering about the overhead lines on Gratiot Avenue as we drove downtown for our annual trip to Hudson's for our school clothes! Good grief, that is a LONG time ago ...

Makes me think of the old commercial about rice a roni.... on the trolley there in San Francisco.

Actually, it is a Melbourne tram, a W2 - one of 7 operating in Memphis.

Fascinating Ian.
I, being another Melbournian, recognised it as one of ours.
The link was very interesting.... wasn't surprised to see that the Melbourne ones all trundle out of my local Hawthorn depot. Very familiar site around my suburb.
My addition to that useless bank of information that one absorbs in a day is that No. 520 has been preserved privately by Elton John at Windsor.

Well done Ian. Yanks and Aussies alike think we own that one. You've built a bridge over the pacific with the tram pic.

WW2?!! It doesn't look too different from the Melb trams that I used to catch each day to and from uni ... and every where else in Melbourne. That was in the mid More...

fii I am a card-carrying member of the Bombers, but shhhh don't tell anyone.
I too used to ride everywhere in the trams in my youth (one or two years ago now). I still have vivid memories of the 'Allnighters' which used to leave every hour through the night. I caught a few of them in my More...

The one in the photo has two bogies and is much more sedate. BTW, it's not my photo.

Great shot.
