I remember going to visit the Mackinac Bridge while it was being built! Quite impressive and a real time saver when it was done if you were going to go to the upper peninsula of Michigan. On Labor Day they have a bridge walk in which thousands participate. At other times it is off-limits to pedestrians.

One of the episodes of the TV show "Dirty Jobs" is on the Mackinac Bridge-- painting the inside of the towers as well as changing a light bulb up at the top-- it is amazing to see up close

That water looks nice and cool - so hot here I could just jump in...but not from the bridge!

It's a magnificent bridge; driving across it can give you a serious case of the willies.

Vici - This water usually is cool. It is warm only near the shore. It will cool you down nicely!

They have people waiting to help drive people across this bridge. It you get half way across, and freeze, they will come and help you drive your vehicle across. On a very windy day, they will have you cross it with a semi-truck. It truely is amazing to see, if you come to Michigan.

Hey Debby! That sounds like when they have people try swimming underneath the Golden Gate bridge - also VERY cold!
I have been to Michigan once. Drove up from Chicago when I lived there many years ago. I visited Livonia - are you anywhere near there? Thought the state was lovely.

Vici - I live an hour north of Livonia. My husband worked at the GM Spring and Bumper plant there at 96/275. Unfortunately, it is no longer there! Just an empty field.

AHHH, Yahhh!!!! It does move! It is the 3rd longest suspension bridge in the world. You can't tell it is moving when you are on it though. It is designed with grates on the inside lanes. There is a web site if you Google Mackinac Bridge with a lot of interesting facts.

It never ceases to amaze me each time I cross it!!! You can see it for a ways on I-75 before you cross it because of its heighth! Motorcycles stay on the outside lanes because it is much smoother!

I love Bridges. Do they have some form of Bridge climb, or can you go inside the pylons?

Pedestrians are not allowed on the bridge except for Labor day, when you can walk across the bridge. If I am not mistaken, I think they close the whole bridge for the walk? I believe the pillars are filled with cement.

As a child, my family vacationed every summer on Mackinac Island. We went by way of the Upper Peninsula- shorter from Wisconsin- so I never crossed the bridge. I even spent part of my honeymoon there. Beautiful area.
