Question of the day: Why are manhole covers round? Anyone?
11/Aug/08 12:19 AM

I've seen a few round men but no square ones ... Hang on.. perhaps I have seen a few square men.

From an economic rationalist perspective a circle has less area (and is therefore cheaper to make).... than a square with the same diametre. ????

it is less More...

Let's be politically correct here!
They are "people hole covers"!

Even the "people hole" covers are beautiful in Darmstardt!

maen all! manhole covers are round because it is the best design that can't fall through and are easy to seat unlike rectangular ones that will unseat in heavy traffic. if you ever tried to pick one up you'll see the ease of fitting side. with the price of scrap iron at $11 per c/wt they are fair game around these parts for junk dealers. big problem at night.

3:01 Maen! Deltz, that was a great answer. I hadn't thought about it before, but the fact that no matter how you turn it, a round cover can't fall through is probably the most important reason.

I think that the protagonists for a gender-neutral language would call them 'Access Covers'. I don't.

Good for you, Ian. I'd like to call them 'Ed Norton's access to work' covers, but I don't think that would play in some parts of the world.
Congratulations to all (and Fi, who answered first) who said that a round cover would not accidently fall into the hole. Another good answer would be that they are easier to move. (Ever try to roll a square?)

Hal, when my father first left the bush to earn his fortune in the big city, his Dad, who was a timber man said, "Son, never lift anything heavier than a pencil." Advice which I have applied to my own life.

There are some fascinating designs for manhole covers all over the world. More...

Benny, it is a special form of madness that wants to paint everything grey. I am about to get into trouble, but I think that 'chairperson' is a very ugly word. There are some words in the English language that do not reflect the gender of the office bearer but give title to the office itself. More...

Ian i must agree with you with most of what you said, but the worst thing is the people that screw around with our language get paid to do so

People who think a woman shouldn't object to being called a 'chairman' never seem to feel the same way about a male nurse being called 'sister' or 'matron'. And a female Lord Mayor's husband is never the Lady Mayoress, is he? Nobody screams 'political correctness' when they find new words for them. What's sauce for the goose ...

No Benny the worst thing is that they still have their highly paid jobs because no-one can find the way to knock the 'ess' off of lioness without being eaten for the affrontary!

Elvira, I'd be happy to call you 'chairperson', or 'chairwoman', if that is what you prefer. But I'd like to be called 'chairman' because that is what I prefer.

Elvira, Grass-hopper, HalT, Benny et al, I think we should stop this discussion before someone gets genuinely hurt. After all, it's only a lump of cast iron we are talking about.

Ah, the voice of sanity and reason steps in and calms the troubled waters. Thank you, Ian, for putting it all in its proper perspective.

Manhole covers re round because, as mentioned already, they fit in any direction....and also becasue they're easily moved by rolling. I was just reading this somewhere.
