What was really interesting was to come across this building unexpectedly in the middle of a German city - knowing that there is no love lost between the Russians and the Germans. I had no idea of the connection until I looked it up later.

Great Jigsaw thanks Ian.
It is always a toss up - what do I enjoy the most: seeing a larger picture or completing the puzzle.

6:42 Ian, about the "love lost" understand what you were saying about Russia and Germany, but since it was built because Czar Nicholas II's wife Alexandria was born in Darmstadt, maybe there was a little love at the outset (one hopes) and maybe there was some "love lost" after all? lol
Do you have any photos of the neighboring Waldspirale?
