Trust the 'electrical institute' to put the meter box right where it will spoil the symmetry! The 'building institute' is (as per its charter) running behind schedule constructing the matching galvanized iron extension!

They didn't have an archetectural engineer involved. Everybody makes that mistake. Just look at the avocado.

Are Mechanics Institutes just an Australian thing or did other countries have them? I know that the Melbourne Athenaeum was the first one in Victoria in 1843 and it's still running as a library. Worth checking out if ever you're there, with an ancient lift, a bell that tinkles, lots of woodwork and enormous windowslooking out onto Collins Street.

Hi everyone,

I don't know if they are only Australian, but they were established as a library and common meeting place for teaching apprentices during the 1800's and early 1900's. Later many became part of the school system as technical schools for the teaching of trades. I would be interested in knowing more though.
