Fiona, I can TRY to pronounce the wine as you've suggested, but every time I do, I have to sneeze ... and my lips get stuck in a grimace ... I think I'll stay with, "Gimme some of the red ..."

How can something deep purple in colour (note there is a 'u' in colour) be called an Egg Plant. Just what do you give your chickens to eat if their eggs are that colour?
13/Oct/09 5:51 AM
 |  |

....and just who decided that herbs should be pronounced erbs?
Coriander is coriandre but not cilantro

You need to practise Judy - for every bottle you open you need to say it 6 times - once for every glass in that bottle. You'll soon get the hang of it!
13/Oct/09 6:25 AM
 |  |

Here you go, Judy.
CHEERS!
13/Oct/09 6:32 AM
 |  |

Thats a bit harsh Fiona after 6 glasses I don't think I could say it. But tell me exactly how was it pronounced? I only know one way - une verre de Cab Sav s'il tu plait

You're supposed to pour it in a glass??
13/Oct/09 6:33 AM

just a tad more upmarket generally Judy, but not really necessary for you.

Mais j'aime bien une verre de Sirah. Au fond de notre jardin nous avons les vignes du cepage Merlot.

Now MY turn to laugh!! Judy, you're a stitch. Oh dear, hope Kathy & Fiona don't try to alter that term!
13/Oct/09 6:37 AM

Mo & Fiona - how do you say "you're a stitch" in French?
13/Oct/09 6:39 AM

... Very funny, Wee Lass. But ... SIX glasses? What do you drink out of ... thimbles?

I have received a house warming gift of a wine decanter. It is shaped like a wine glass and holds 1 litre. I will photograph it when first I use it.
13/Oct/09 6:40 AM

I'd go for 'tu es une idiote' Kathy!

If Judy's Stitch, who's Lilo?
13/Oct/09 6:42 AM
 |  |

Kathy, I do not know how to say that in English having never heard the saying before
I would have said 'you are a card'
I might add that I am sipping a charming Pinotage from South Africa.
13/Oct/09 6:42 AM
 |  |

Mo, how can you possibly live in the heart of Bordeaux wine country and even consider sipping something all the way from Africa??? What's your carbon footprint worth???
13/Oct/09 6:44 AM
 |  |

Fiona it was a gift and I'm not going to clean my drains with it. So in the privacy of my own home (and on the world wide web) I'm sipping it. It's not bad either.
13/Oct/09 6:47 AM
 |  |

Hmm, Lilo - any volunteers? Mo, I think "you are a card" is appropriate, too.
Is a Pinotage white or red? That's one I've never heard of. Gosh, we are all really increasing our vocabulary today!
13/Oct/09 6:47 AM

I googled a translation of you're a stitch.
I got 'Tu es un point' does this help you Kathy?
13/Oct/09 6:48 AM
 |  |

I had never heard of Colombard grapes until I went to Australia but it makes a very tasty mix with chardonnay
13/Oct/09 6:50 AM
 |  |

Thanks, Mo. Funny how "un point" sounds like it could mean someone with a stick!
13/Oct/09 6:51 AM
 |  |

Pinotage is red. Darker, deeper, possibly sweeter than a Cab Sav. Perhaps heavier more o the lines of an Italian Barolo
13/Oct/09 6:53 AM
 |  |

That surprises me, Mo. We see French Columbard for sale in our wine shops, but you had never heard of Columbard grapes? How about you, Fiona? And where is Jane to help us out with this wine discussion? She & Jaime know a lot about wine.
13/Oct/09 6:53 AM
 |  |

And where did Stitch (stick?) go?
13/Oct/09 6:57 AM
 |  |

It is used as a 'bulker' in Australia but is not a grape grown normally in France. Just googled the following -
Colombard will never be in the first division of wine grapes. Instead it is a stalwart of the supermarket bargain bracket, being relatively easy to grow. As it does not have much More...

Apparently it is only in USA that it is known as French Colombard
13/Oct/09 6:59 AM

Kathy, I think the best translation would be 'tu es un rigolo', no, not a gigolo, a 'rigolo' - someone who makes you laugh with witty humour. I'm not sure how you decided that was appropriate for Judy though, she's just an old bat.
13/Oct/09 7:00 AM
 |  |

.....But.....have you tried Vignonier?
13/Oct/09 7:00 AM
 |  |

so French columbard is basically plonk - hello headache!
13/Oct/09 7:01 AM

Fiona, I now have a vision.....Gigolo Judy...not really a mental picture I want to go to bed with.
Calling André - bring me visions of gigolo J D

Mo, I hope you are not just limiting your indulgence to the local drop from Bordeaux. Aussie wines are gaining a huge reputation. The French got really touchy a few years ago about us using their names for our wines, and so you now get a different name for wines that you would recognise - based More...

Fiona, did you really say "Judy est une vieille batte!"?
13/Oct/09 7:04 AM
 |  |

Thanks for exercising my brain cells and making me reach back into ancient history to exercise ma francais! I fear my education was sadly lacking - they didn't teach me the important things in life, like the names of the wines!
13/Oct/09 7:04 AM
 |  |

Mo, given that one of the meanings of 'batte' is a washboard, that sheds a whole new light on things - you old washboard Judy! I quite like that.
13/Oct/09 7:07 AM
 |  |

Mariane - I agree. We have had some very good Aussie wines & they had screw caps, too!
Now could you wine experts tell me if shiraz & syrah are two different names for basically the same kind of wine?
Mo, we had a very yummy viognonier at a restaurant once, but when I bought one More...

Marianne, I can assure you that after spending at least 9 months of my precious holiday time during the last 10 years on your antipodean island that I am no stranger to the delights of your fermented grape juice. I have visited delightful wine estates from Leewins in WA, to the Hunter and Barossa More...
