Giving a child or a grandchild some private, quality time is much more valuable than any expensive gift, and it stays with them a lot longer. Take a walk ... go to the beach ... play a game of cards ... read a book together ... and, while you do it, give the child 100% of your attention. It will make the child's day, and the effects will linger for a lifetime.

OMG, DAVE ... this one looks even guiltier than the last one, as while not anatomically correct, he has this fiendish look on his face! Is this why so many men enjoy remote controls? LOL

Fishing does that for my husband, but to each his own, I guess! :)

Good Thursday Maen, all!

Elsa: thank you for your input regarding fiscal responsibility.

Our son knows our family does not buy the latest 'toys': we are more likely to get Pentium 3 when Pentium 4 comes out and 3 goes on sale!

Ah, DAVE, you don't strike me as a control freak. And since you're such a nice guy, and a bit of an innocent, I won't make any cracks about adjusting or extending your antenna.

Well, you're all at it again. I love the hat tilted up because she's leaning against the tree. She's sure concentrating.

LK, I sent you an email. Did it come through?

Fishing lesson for LK: When purchasing a fishing rod, as all of the fishermen on this site will know, the flexibility and stiffness are more significant considerations that the length of the rod.

I was only going to comment on the cute cowgirl in pink, but once I started reading the posts, I just wanted to comment on the 'giving your children everything' theme. Elsa, you had wise parents! As a parent, I find it difficult to say no as well, but do believe that it's better that kids learn More...

Judy - so it should be flexiably stiff? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Beehive - I know how you like warm and fuzzy things so I changed the photo on my page. My son's puppy with a pair of socks in her mouth, soooooooooooooo cute!

OK, LK, I should have said that the ''action and stiffness'' are considered in purchasing a fishing rod ... I was attempting to ''translate'' for non-fishermen ... gonna let this lie now ...

Well Judy, hate to tell you this but my dad is a fishing guide on the Mississippi. I grew up around fishing all my life, in fact I even taught my husband how to clean fish. So I know all about picking a good rod!

Ginger from Calgary - Maybe you and your kids could learn together? There are non-profit organizions that help people learn to plan their finances. Elsa, thanks for your advice. I didn't mean to imply that we habitually go overboard though. We're usually the last to get the latest game or computer, although by some quirk both my kids have cell phones, but only 'pay as you go' and just to keep in touch. My youngest sort of got his by default More...

I think it is important for kids to know that we can't always get what you want, and that there are more important things in life that getting the latest gadget. Reading books, spending time together baking cookies and playing outside were much more important than playing with the latest video More...
