Rayray:
I've never responded to a single posting of yours as amazingingly entertaining as they have been, but I have to break my silence regarding your last post. I laughed so hard I had to step outside to keep from harming others.

Since inquiring minds want to know ... These are the numbers from San Diego County, the location of the most serious wildfires. 550,000 people have been evacuated, and 50,000 have been able to return home. 1250 homes have been lost and many more damaged. The good news is that only one person has More...

Wonderful news Judy. Celebrating the brave firefighters and the community of San Diego as they still struggle to bring this nightmare to an end, I will dedicate my newest musical offering....Breezin by Jazz Legend, George Benson. Give it a listen if you like smooth, melodic music. More...

I think that all Aussies have a fairly vivid appreciation of what the people of CA are going through. The nightmare of a raging bushfire is a reasonably common occurrence during our summer months. We wish our American cousins good fortune in the current crisis and although we cannot be of direct More...

JANE, You mommented about the media and the numbers they are using for evacuees. I heard some talk of how the media was getting the numbers of evacuees. The reverse 911 calls ging out were counted. THEN different media multiplied number of households notified by the number of persons they believe More...

Please let the winds change and blow the fires back on to themselves, and for their to be much needed rain on top of that. Our thoughts and care going to all in California - the sheer numbers of people and the terror are unimaginable.

Jeb: I am pleased you enjoy my attempts at wry humour. I am not sure what Jane's left-handed reservations are. Is she trying to tell you what you should or shouldn't laugh about?

Henry Lawson (Australian Poet):

The hill-fires looked like lighted streets
Of cities in the range.-----

The cattle-tracks between the trees
Were like long dusky aisles
And on a sudden breeze the fire
Would sweep along for miles;
Like sounds of More...

On another note entirely... I didn't want to hog these pages with my own not-so-important stuff, but I have put a little update on My Page about my daughter's cochlear implant. It's all good.

Rayray and Jeb - I was just kidding!!! Honest! Wry humor deserves a good chuckle. I was just taken aback by Jeb's guffaw! Probably because there's been so much serious discussion around here lately. In any event, please keep the humor flowing!

ditto to Ian's words from another Aussie.
We have been warned here that we are likely to get more fires and worse fires as a result of climate change. I wonder what the ecological footprint of my laptop is? And how do I balance that with its incredible effectiveness in communication?

Many of the evacuee centers are open air facilities. The temperatures: L 65° - H 90° (L 18°- H 32º).

With a low moving in the temperature will drop to around L 60° - H 70° (L 15° - H 21°) and Friday getting morning fog - which will lay the fire down, More...

Some natural disasters, you have little to no warning (Earthquakes, Tornados), while others (Fires, Floods & Hurricanes, etc.) you often have time to pack and get out of the way. I have been in fires where we didn't have much time and we stayed to fight the fire and saved the home ourselves. More...

While living in the hills of Southern Calif. I have been through 2 major fires, 2 major earthquakes & 2 minor earthquake, 2 mudslides and one flood. That was over a 50 year period in 3 different residences.

Good to see your name, JUDY!!! I have a niece in law school in San Diego, so it has been more than just a little impersonally scary for our family, also.

I think my wording was rather awkward - I meant the scary was not impersonal - we had a bit of vested interest?

Sincere thoughts with all of the victims of the awful fires. The horror never leaves you; also the feeling of being powerless to halt something so ferocious.

Eve - Speaking of natural disasters, for all the time I've spent on the North Carolina coast (the entire month of September for many, many years), the only major hurricane I experienced was in 2003 in Richmond, Virginia, of all places! 100 miles inland and we got whacked! We lost 6 huge oaks (we More...
