In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and More...

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather More...

Good afternoon. Quick check in from the Adelaide Convention Centre where I have been at a midwives conference for the last couple of days. Home tonight. Had dinner with Elsie last night, two midwives, we had no trouble connecting and talked and talked and talked.

Ian, if you want to see straight lines between points, go to any school that has a campus. The students will always cut a path through anything in their way in order to save one nanosecond getting to the next class. Naturally, the school will keep trying to grow grass there instead of moving the walkway.

So right Daplap, and no matter how muddy that path gets, they just keep walking through it!

This is naughty but since I'm Scottish I think I can get away with it. I read this and laughed and laughed - it's not funny at all but I laughed. Maybe I need a holiday! This happened in north-east Scotland.

Fiona,
It is increasingly that victims are, these days, being penalised.
To be a victim is becoming a sign of weakness and as such must be socially punished.
Contrarily crime and harassment are becoming signs of strength and character, and are being rewarded. It is a nasty trend and a gangstalkers paradise.

Rayray, what made me laugh was that the notion of an "accident" no longer exists - there are no accidents today, nothing that can be accepted as being no more than a unfortunate meeting of two people or objects on a given day. Someone has to be in the wrong. That damn sheep should never More...

Just checked in to note CP had beaten me to it. We had a great time. Next time any of you are in Adelaide....the offer is open to you too.
PS CP is a lovely lady - as all midwives are.

That too, Fiona.
You are quite right about need to apportion blame (unnecessarily)
25/Sep/09 7:24 PM
 |  |

And; if one person is (quite clearly) to blame for something, that person will never admit it, but instead will propose some crazy and improbable argument as to why someone else is to blame; and, for the final decision on the matter, a vote is taken. The most popular people are exonerated, and to hell with the truth. That even applies to Court judgements these days. It's called 'democracy'.

Being the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time has become an offence
25/Sep/09 7:29 PM

That has always been an expression that has confused me. The wrong person in the wrong place. Don't two negatives make a positive. Shouldn't we say either the wrong person in the right place or the right person in the wrong place.
Of course Rayray you had three negatives so that's okay.

The owner of the sheep is conspicuous by his absence I feel! I think he should be the one paying for the new road surface.

Rayray - the sheep was in the wrong place at the wrong time, not the bloke on the bike! The sheep is guilty!

Exactly my point, Daplap. What kind of planning is there in fighting the straight line instead of accommodating it?

I remember probably 45 years ago, my father hit a horse in a suburban Sydney street. Unfortunately the horse had to be destroyed. It was a VW beetle and with no engine in the front, it completely caved in. The owner of the horse was charged under some obscure Act about allowing animals unfettered on a public highway. He was also sued by Dad's insurance company to recover the costs of car repairs.

How long does it take to get from La Spezia to Monaco or Nice by train. This is not one of Genn's puzzles.

a while Saylz - looks about 200k on the map and you'll probably need to change trains.

Not long home from Adelaide. Was in my jammies within 10 minutes of getting in the door. A hot drink and I'm off to bed.

Thank you, elsie, and Keith.

I take your point, but critically, Saylz. One wrong restrictively refers to person, another only to place, and the third solely to time.
It is a popular and well established expression that often evokes your criticism but it still goes on; and I think it is OK - if possible ambiguous.

I supppose the issue becomes important when for example a coroner is trying to attribute cause of death in marginal situations, where the cause of a death could be suicide/accident/murder.
