2:35 Hello. I hope all are well.

Thinking of all those in Samoa, Indonesia and North Vietnam...very sad circumstances. Makes you realise just how lucky we are.

Good morning all.
Condolences to Glenn.
Happy Birthday to Jill's boy and to Bean's boy, Lachie.

CynB
Islands do protect from tsunamis. There was an example of such in Padang not many years ago. There was a number of medium magnitude quakes They were not too big, but some of them produced small tsunamis. Only one tsunami from them to get through to Padang was from the only quake epicentre More...

However with a very big quake and tsunami the wave will 'regroup' into a continuum once past an island - then the island offers less protection. When Krakatoa exploded last century, tsunamis made their way all up the Sumatran coast and the waves regrouped in the wake of islands that would have More...

I guess the Great Barrier reef would offer a lot of protection against incoming tsunamis - at least further north in Queensland - but I am not sure of my geography around Brisbane in that respect.

Rayray, you may have hinted at this in your first responding post, but islands may protect from some of the initial impact, but don't do much to ameliorate a surge, and the flooding that follows. Less destruction of buildings, perhaps, but just as much flooding...and, most likely, casualties.

Thanks Rayray - the islands almost block the bay and are reasonably close at our end (South) of the bay but are more distant at the northern end where the widest gap and shipping lanes are. I heard after the big Indonesian tsunami that if one that size reached Sydney harbour it would enter through More...

I am worried about Padang. It is a coastal city of about 900,000 people and is built on a flat stretch of coast. However inland less than a couple of miles is a continuous wall of mountains. A tsunami;if it struck; next, and quickly, would rebound off the mountain wall, back at the city - after the initial impact. A big tsunami would completely wipe out Padang.

Yes Ian. I think you are right. But perhaps most deaths are caused by mechanical effects. Do you think there is more personal control about one's fate in a surge? - albeit dnagerous of course.

In 2004 the Great Sumatran Quake was preceded by a large (rift)quake near Macquarie Island. One idea is that Antarctic quakes predispose twin locations in the tropics to a subsequent (and consequent; subduction) event. The same happened just now. There was a relatively big quake (for the Antarctic More...

I don't know, Rayray. The immediate instinct is to run away from buildings and anything else that might shower heavy debris on you. But people are surprisingly casual about rising water, not knowing how powerful and violent it can be.

Australia's population is expected to reach 22 million this afternoon at 2:02pm. I'm not sure how they calculate it to arrive at 2:02pm exactly.
What a shame CP won't be there to catch baby 22million but maybe Elsie is at work and will be the lucky catcher.

Welcome baby 22 million

I remember watching a programme, many years ago, about survivors of disasters, how they reacted at the time and how they felt afterwards. Most felt guilt at the way they had behaved toward others around them, ruthlessly using anyone or anything to fight their way to safety. I am sure the programme More...

André, there was an article in the Times earlier this year which interviewed the survivors of major disasters (plane crashes, ferries that sank etc). It analysed reactions to panic situations. The majority of people literally freeze and 'wait' to be told what to do - they are incapable of More...
