Chip is cute. However, in our neighborhood, we are a little over populated with these little guys.

So, is it a Chipmunk or a Squirrel? It looks like a squirrel to me, but I don't know the different appearances around the world.

Gardening this time of year for me is raking leaves. This is how I pay for having lots of shade in the hot summer.

well Dorthea, a weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill
except for learning how to grow in rows. So no wonder your weeds thrive inspite of the weed killer..

I believe that's a squirrel, Keith. Chipmunks (at least around here) are much smaller. I USED to feed the ones in my back yard until one didn't get his food in a timely manner and chewed a hole in my screen to get in. Trying to do the self-serve thing, I guess!

We have lots of red fox squirrels in our neighborhood. It is more fun to watch the squirrels and blue jays play tag of an afternoon. They really make a game of it.

Perhaps the person who said work well done never needs doing over, never weeded a garden.

Many plant hormone (auxin) weed killers temporarily promote growth so the plants outgrow their supply of nutrients and die. The plants simply outgrow themselves, go floppy, and keel over.

Weeds are:
(1) Plants growing where they are not wanted
(2) (slang) Clothes
(3) (sing.) Cannabis
Odd mixture!

A weed is a plant that is not only in the wrong place, but intends to stay. Also I feel weed is a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered. They are just there, always
an example of the wondrous assertion of Being.

A tourist in Vienna goes through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears some music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source.
He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads: "Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827."
Then he More...

If I knew that Chip was from North America, I would say he is an Eastern Grey Squirrel. Since this is an international site, he could be from anywhere. Squirrels can be cute and funny, or complete terrors! I have a scar on my finger where a squirrel bit me through a leather glove!

Appy, wheather a plant is a weed also depends on where you are located. We have fields of golden rod, they grow at the edges of our woods and try to come up any unmowed spot. We consider them weeds. I had a friend visit from Chicago, and she said the 7 acre field of them at the end of our lane was More...

It's OK, Jane - it just took Davecat a couple of days to catch up with the cemetery/dead folks humour of the other day.

These weeds are dandylions. The bigger they get the more prickles. As they are on the front lawn my mailwomen has to walk around them.

Angie - I want your gardening Mum! My garden is full of weeds right now... But I have sent in my assignment and once I get a handle on the inside of the house I might get a chance to have a go at the outside too....

I don't know about the language of flowers but I know if I say the wrong thing my plants are easily offended! Right my favorite oncidium orchid Shari Baby (blossoms have a wonderful chocolate fragrance) is shedding flowers just because I forgot to say hello to it! So I had to apologize very abjectly to get it to stop! Don't know until tomorrow to see if it forgave me.

My phalaenopsis is getting ready to bloom but my Hawaiian bamboo orchid still looks like the stick it was when my older son brought it from Hawaii two months ago. Anyone speak Hawaiian?
