Jeb. We have a favorite Yoda quote here at the Plum household that goes: "Do or do not. There is no Try."
Could you, perhaps, be a jedi?
(Would that make you a "jebi"?)
I think the organizers meant Try as in "experience something new to see More...

Plum--congratulations to your daughter-- what a wonderful effort and congratulations to you to for encouraging her in this endeavor-- at 8 they still need a fair amount of direction from Mom in order to complete that type of event-- good job!!

Mymare - Good work! I, too, bike whenever I can. I only use my car when I go to the mainland. So now I only fill up the tank about once every 6 or 7 weeks (and I usually only need 8 or 9 gallons). I'll be biking to the beach later today for my daily swim. My only regret is that I can't bring More...

Shosho, is the word pedantic and pedagogue from the same root meaning? I think so. Being pedantic about some things is often called for, in others, not. Without turning into a grammer nazi on these free wheeling pages, there are times when one has to trip over improper usage. For the sake of a More...

Jeb, you must get very frustrated with your local newspaper. The Times-Union (out of Jacksonville, FL) has a great policy of requesting readers to alert them of spelling and grammatical errors. And we do! It really keeps the reporters on their toes!
14/Jul/08 4:42 AM
 |  |

One of the more common errors that used to appear regularly in our local paper was the expression "different than" which, of course, should be "different from". Alert readers have just about eliminated that grammatical faux pas!

Alert readers here just shake their collective heads in frustration. Our publisher considers himself an elitist intellectual. He is, afterall, a small town Kansas boy, Harvard educated. Doesn't that make him special? But he has an elastic grip on what is 'real'.

My personal hate is the word 'that' in improper places. 'she was that excited!'
We do however have to accept thet English is a living language & subject to change & additions at any moment. (not to mention cultural specifics - now there is a whole new can of worms!)

Re The "try thing" --- In my younger days, (a long time ago) Little League Baseball held tryouts. If one was good enough, he made the team. If not well too bad work on your skills and try again next year. Now we have "sign ups". Everyone gets to play. We wouldn't want to hurt the "little darlings" feelings and self esteem, would we...

The 'try' discussion and follow-up comments to it remind me of the following...

The father replied, "It is mostly a matter of degree. Let More...

CG, my most heartfelt thanks for ah-ha moment received in the parable of your last post. I see now that I have been, figuratively speaking, asking the correct question, just not necessarily at the right time. I shall try to do better in the future.

And shall also try to make sure all the necessary words wind up in the sentence where they are needed most.

Jerry, I have to disagree on the tryouts thing, up to a certain age anyway, and it has nothing to do with self esteem. I think kids should be encouraged to be active in whatever way possible and blocking access to 'popular' sport at 7 years old has the opposite effect. Kids don't play baseball More...

I'm sure it's just like a shoot off a plant - Thanks
