I never heard of holding back boys with summer birthdays(our schools start in late summer, early fall) until AFTER I sent my son to kindergarten at age 5. He was just about the youngest one in his class. At our parent teacher conference, the teacher (who was wonderful, by the More...

Whether or not people plan their children for school entry may or may not be real, and if real, might not be widespread.

But in the US, having a child just before the end of the tax year has been a noted phenomenon for a very long time.

Good afternoon to all! So who in our illustrious crowd of players was visiting the Canary Islands?

been there, done that, twice, but not my photo! And while on the subject of the Canaries, without cheating, does anyone know why they're called the Canaries?? This is not a trick question!

When you're from the country you look at things a little differently...
A farmer got into his pickup, drove to a neighboring farm and knocked at the door. A young boy, about 9, opened the door.
"Is your Dad home?" the rancher asked.
"No sir, he isn't," the boy replied. More...

Fiona, I believe they were named after the Canary Islands as that is the place where most of them are found.

Interesting little island Tenerife - in the middle is Mount Teide, a volcano. To the south of Mount Teide everything is dry and arid and the sun shines and shines - to the north everything is lush and green and it rains much more often. The island is literally split in two. Spaghetti westerns were made in the south as it looks so like the wild west!

be more precise with the subject of your sentence Greg! 'they' = ???

Tenerife was also the scene of the worst aircrash ever in terms of loss of human life - 583 killed when two jets ran into each other on the runway in 1977.

Not even a nice try Fiona? That answer (named after the islands) is correct in Trivial Pursuit.

Greg, the canary (bird) may have been named after the Canary Islands, but the Canary Islands were not named after canary birds! And I know that one of the questions in Triv is 'what are the Canary Islands named after?' And I know that the answer is not canaries!!!!

What else can any of you think of that wasn't named after canaries? Off the top of my head, I can think of rhinoceros.
17/Sep/09 6:25 AM

I was told that they were named after seals that were thought to be dogs. Canis?
17/Sep/09 6:26 AM

...unless there is a pigmy canary rhinoceros on a small island in Malaysia that hasn't yet been discovered.

well done Kathy! island of the dogs! Ten points to Maryland!

I didn't realize you were asking about the islands and their Latin name. I also didn't realize there was a dog rhinoceros, but I do hope Jeb discovers that one in Malaysia. Now to think up a name that honors Jeb for his discovery. So much to learn, so much to think about, so little time.

I've got a question for you technically minded people out there.
Does anyone know if you can copy a YouTube to a usb so I can load it onto another computer not attached to the internet?
Is it legal? I'm assuming that because they are out in the public domain it would be ok.

Jeb: The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning "Island of the Dogs"; but in African probably translates to rhinocerae (a bunch of rhinos)...
