To from: I think what we call thongs, you refer to as flip-flops.

It actually sounds a bit like a combination of the silent minute we do on Nov 11 and the European thing done on November 1st (All Saints Day)when people visit family graves, have some quiet time and leave chrystanthemums (I can't spell that but hopefully you know what i mean).
 |  |
We do. It's called Veteran's Day and celebrates the end of WW1. It's a more serious holiday than Memorial Day and also honors anyone who served in our armed forces.

to jaid and from ...
We don't know where from is from of course ... could be NZ, & kiwis call them jandals. And we all thought we spoke the same language, eh!
 |  |
Interesting, Steph. To begin with I was thinking it would be strange to have two different days to think about war, but I guess we have ANZAC Day as well as Nov 11. Do you do stuff with parades and so on? We do that much more on ANZAC Day than Nov 11 these days. Bit of overkill to make a big thing More...

Loza, Nov. 11 is much more patriotic with parades and ceremonies. I guess there probably are a few parades on Memorial Day, but it seems like it's a holiday that older people celebrate for it's true meaning and younger people celebrate because it's a day off from work!

Well after that looong discussion, let me wish you (y'all?!) peaceful rememberances - a very happy holiday!

on a lighter note, from a list of 'children say the darndest things':
The word trousers is an uncommon noun because it is singular at the top and plural at the bottom.
Syntax is all the money collected at the church from sinners.

Loza, If from is the same from other posts from from are, then I'm pretty sure from is from the US. Now I think I need a drink to clear my head!

Thanks. I'm one of those who visits cemetaries, but I also live it up on the first weekend of summer! Now I have to go walk my puppy. You have a great day..I mean, night.

I reckon you did amazingly well, Jaid!

Good Maen everyone! Hi Loza! Did you see my question about where you teach?
Judy/SD & Ed - sorry the Pistons lost.
Nal - congrats on the Heats' win.
Hope everyone remembers what Memorial Day is really all about. Thank you to all who have served our country & lived, & thank you to all the families of those who died. They are not forgotten.

Thanks for being there and for answering my queries Steph. There's also an Irish Blessing that can be sung to a beautiful tune:
May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the Sun shine warm upon your face
And the rains fall soft upon your fields
Until we More...

hi Kathy good maeN! I teach at a TAFE Institute in Melbourne. I'm not sure what your equivalent of a TAFE would be in the US. It's not a university but offers more vocational sorts of courses. I think you have Institutes of Technology but maybe they have a higher status than our TAFEs. I teach More...

I saw your kind comments on Tough - Thankyou- and replied there. ;)

Loza - Which TAFE?
 |  |
Here's a different question - instead of asking what MAEN means, I'll now ask what TAFE means! The T might be Technical, but I can't figure out F?
 |  |
Technical And Further Education - I think.
 |  |
The full name is quite a mouthful! - Box Hill Institute of Technical and Further Education. You'd think it'd be abbreviated to Box Hill Institute, but it used to be called a College then they changed it to an Institute. What's in a name, eh!? Box Hill is a suburb about 30mins east of central Melbourne.
 |  |
well done Fi!
We also have CAEs ... Council? of Adult Education, but they do part time courses only, whereas TAFEs have a large number of full time students doing courses that may take one or two years.
Acronyms are amazing tho:

Then in their last year of school the kids get a certificate which has a different name in different states - ours is the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education).. run by organisations called VCAA and VTAC - and and some lucky students may then study at the VCA - Victorian College of the Arts. I More...

I was A TAFE teacher in the mid/late 90s in Gippsland and I'm familiar with the long-winded names. In the 5 years I was teaching there we underwent - I think, 2 different college names and 3 different course restructures. I learned a lot.... especially about marking students work into the wee More...

SOSE - now that's a new one on me!! American teachers - do we have that here in U.S.?? I know we do have what is now called Integrated Science instead of the plain old General Science from back in the olden days when I went to school. Even ESL (English as a Second Language) is a new term since my days. How about some other new acronyms in education? Anyone?
 |  |
LOTE - Language Other Than English.

I think you are right re SOSE

E is Environment

Hey Fi well sung!
How come you moved up to the NT?
We went to Darwin/Kakadu/Katherine for the mid-year holidays last year which was a wonderful experience.
 |  |
Our international students' course is called ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students) and at some point many of them have to take the IELTS test - and there I'm not 100% sure as we really only ever call it that! but I think it is International English Language Test S..... (help!)

From doesn't like it when I 'talk' too much, so I will go get some more yard work done. Judy/SD (my co-host on the Judy/Kathy Show!)should be up soon (9;30 AM here, only 6:30 in CA), & since she's a former teacher she can probably think of lots of American acronyms. Interesting topic, Loza!
Have a good day/night everyone.

I came up for the winter in 2001 ;)

It's obviously been a long winter

 |  |
Ooops, forgot one last thing. fi from NT has submitted many wonderful photos from Viet Nam & elsewhere, but she is too modest to brag about them. You can find many in the Photo Gallery in Tough & Kids sections. She is quite a good photographer in my humble opinion. Maybe Gath could add a line with each photo to include the names of the photographers IF they agree to be known.

Indeed!
I'm off to bed now, so take care y'all and have a nice changeover to the new puzz.
 |  |
ps
the 'indeed' was re Fi's long winter; crossed with Kathy's message!
I'll have to go look through those photos tomorrow. I've never visited the Tough site!!

Good Maen all!

Loza, I like the story of the man who at the end of his life looked back at all he had done and saw two sets of footprints in the sand during the good times. He asked God who made the second set of footprints. God said 'I was walking beside you'. The man noticed that in the bad times there was More...

KATHY - and here was me thinking you were snubbing me!! Thanks for your reply - I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip. And you can add me to your list of teachers too!!
 |  |
SUSAN - your comment about wearing thongs instead of wellies had me laughing - in France you can wear your thong and STILL wear your wellies, the one not really encroaching on the space of the others!! Hope you understand!!
