if it was not a joke but a statement or comment - then why does it matter how I see it?

saylz: then how would you define "aspiration"? I'm so totally confused now...
08/Dec/09 1:36 PM
 |  |

Well, some people might think it was very funny.

One simple question...do you?

Ian: Your own 'joke' is of the kind that is deliberately posed as offensive to try to argue your dogma. It doesn't achieve that because it goes over a line - and you pushed it over that line. You accuse me of evading the issue but actually (as always on this issue) it is you who is evasive as you are not taking others on board.
08/Dec/09 1:44 PM
 |  |

What's "the line", Rayray?

Something that happens to offend you? And ones that don't offend you are perfectly all right?

08/Dec/09 1:47 PM
 |  |

Well in that case your 'line' is more libertine than mine

As it is a statement I would need more information to know who they were not listening too and what was the subject of the discussion they were suppose to be listening about.
also the word battered has several meanings so that statement is not that clear.
also the alien idea ... I would have More...

Rosemary, you're dodging.

Are you offended by that "joke" as you immediately grasp it?

08/Dec/09 1:54 PM
 |  |
Delighted to see you join in rosemary. Your canny perspective has been sorely missed.
08/Dec/09 1:55 PM

Ok, I'll try again. Are battered women a suitable subject for humor?

08/Dec/09 1:55 PM
 |  |

Of course, I'm also delighted to see you join in.

And I look forward to being deservedly crushed....

no not dodging anything - you said it isnt a joke, so you didnt have to post it in the joke section and as a serious statement I need more information before I post a quality reply to you. You see I like to be fully informed before I reply or place comment so that I make sense.

The notice in our local shop
"BLIND DOGS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A SIGHTED OWNER
may well be offensive because it demeans the social practice of having guide dogs?

And if a 'person' (I avoid the use of the word 'man' as it might be partial) goes into a shop and, in response to a More...

The woman, battered by a howling wind and driving rain, slipped in the mud and landed with a splash. Had she been on stage and a pratfall intended, the audience would have rolling in the aisles. Perspective, Ian, perspective.

Hiya, Ian, Jeb and Anne, sooo noice to see you all here today.
08/Dec/09 2:02 PM

And - you must NEVER refer to "a manhole cover" - it must be names a "person-hole cover"
And - offensive connotations attached to the word "knickers" means that word should never be used.
I am just now in danger of losing all my sense of humour.

Rose, I may not have been born an aussie, yet I do believe I have a thicker hide also, and so totally agree that laughing at ourselves and enjoying a good joke about anything, is the best medicine.

We had a blast on the weekend, liquor was involved, but was it consumed that made us all laugh so much, that blinded me from tears and make my sides hurt so much I couldn’t breath.
08/Dec/09 2:03 PM

I would only post a joke that I find amusing. So Ian, my question to you is, do you find the joke about battered women humorous.
Before you ask, I had heard it before and like most "jokes" you hear the second time there is very little to laugh at.
This conversation reminds me of "Groundhog Day". It's being played over and over again.

If it disappears, ray, check in the butter tray in the fridge. Thats where I found my car keys once. Go figure.

I am returning to my study of the biography of the composer Schubert for a time. I feel passionately sorry for him. What a terrible life he had. Yet he managed to remain cheerful and wrote the most wonderfully lyrical music - in my opinion (which may not be worth very much it seems), the most tuneful, flowing music ever written. Amazing guy.

If that be true Victoria, then why do the same teams keep challenging the same opponents with the same game over and over again?
08/Dec/09 2:10 PM
 |  |

Hi Jeb, thank you
was just passing and saw the age old Ian stir up of the site on political correctness of a joke. (been done ad nauseum) As I am one with a warped and varied sense of humour, who has laughed all weekend at smut and innuendo, who thinks laughter is so good for the soul especially More...

I dunno...it seems like everybody is dancing around the real question. What makes an attempt at humor successful to some people and very ugly to others?

And I keep coming back to this...why are some groups fair game and others off limits?

08/Dec/09 2:10 PM
 |  |

Jeb
I am curious to know where the butter turned up?
08/Dec/09 2:14 PM
 |  |
It all depends on the why doesn't it? Why did the battered woman slip in the mud?

And now, off to spend the rest of the evening with my enchantress and her cat.
08/Dec/09 2:17 PM
 |  |

Before I went I was trying to figure Jeb's comment. In the first place I don't keep my butter in the fridge - it goes too hard to spread. In the second case I have no car and have no need for car-keys.
I may be slow - (it is 3.17am here) - but I don't undestand the comment. Anyway Bye Bye I'm back to Schubert.
08/Dec/09 2:18 PM

Oh, the butter was right where it belonged. The key had fallen behind the container. Why it wound up there is the ageless mystery.

I don't know the answer, but just thought I would say, Good MAEN to you all.
08/Dec/09 2:20 PM

Maybe I should have put it in the joke category.
08/Dec/09 2:20 PM

Every comment is a dodge.

Why doesn't anyone want to examine the question?

08/Dec/09 2:20 PM

as I beat my head against that big brick wall ..
I head back to work mode saying
you can choose to laugh or you can choose to argue, choose to enjoy the joke or ignore the joke ..... choose to live happy or choose to live whining ..... or choose a glass half full or half empty

Jeb, perhaps some people get their kicks out of pushing buttons that they know will get/cause a reaction.
08/Dec/09 2:25 PM

OK, fine. I'll just tell a few more of those jokes and expect everyone to choose to ignore it and live happy.

Well, I started this discussion with a very calm, dispassionate question to Rayray, seeking his analytical abilities in my quest for thought and perhaps even wisdom.

I think it's other people who have reacted with defensive hostility.

Angie, Yasso...

Your question is the most important one:

Why are some groups fair game and others not?

Riddle me that.
