These are giraffes in the Matopos, a reserve close to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe - a beautiful area characterised by large granite domes. Zimbabwe has been through some very dry years and many of the reserves have lost great nos of animals to drought.

Sorry - it wasn't my photo - I was born and grew up there so I get a bit homesick sometimes!

Another place I will probably only visit via photos! Looks very dry there.

Nice to get some wildlife photos. Africa is one place I will likely never go in my lifetime. Too many places, too little time.

Somewhat tricky but managed in time.

It certainly does look drought-stricken, but I would love to be there.

Lucy, This picture was taken in Aug. of 94 when I was traveling around with my daughter. She was there in the Peace Corps in those days teaching near Wedza. This was the time when she called Zimbabwe; 'Africa for beginners' Too bad about what happening over there these days.

An added point, today's picture goes along with the Cape Buffalo that was shown early last week.

These have been great photos, BOBC. I hope that there are more to come! Were you already digital in 1994, or are these scans? Very nice, if that is the case! What is your daughter doing now?

Judy, Thanks, If you want the whole slide show from my 3 weeks over there it will take a while. These pictures were scanned from the origional negatives. I have since gone digital, but my daughter has that camera now. I think this is all I have submitted from that trip at the moment.

BOB: Wow! 36 years of public service ... she must be quite a woman, with a gentle and empathetic soul. Has it been difficult for her to adjust to the ebb and flow of life back in ''civilization?'' You did a good job with her, Bob.

To me, nothing is more moving than a little girl climbing into the sanctuary of Daddy's arms. What a lovely photo! I felt quite homesick as I spent the first 30 years of my life in Zambia and Zimbabwe and have visited many times since. And yes, what's happening there in Zim now is a real tragedy. Not that I don't love my adopted country, but the African bush really gets under your skin. Thanks Bob.

Dan, I know you can't see it in the picture, but they are going down for a drink. It's a watering hole. If I remember correctly, it's a very awkard position for them and they only go down one at a time while the others stand guard. Lucy, you may know more about that than I do.
