More of the same, I'm afraid. SSW 10-15, almost flat calm, The early dense fog is almost completely gone, but the sky is overcast and will be all day. The irony is that the sooner the morning fog burns off, the stronger the afternoon thunderstorms are, since the moisture rises.

What is the building in the photo?

Well Done, Nice Lonely Place

Glad to see pics of Southeast Asia turning up - so many beautiful places in that area of the world!!

Maen, all - and a good Maen indeed!
My only son turns 8 today, so the house is full of celebration. Starting at 7 on a Saturday morning - ouch.

I have 6 children, and they are all boys except for 5 of them. :-) So only son is doubly precious - and even his sisters think so!

To Anne: It's a guard shack, I think, and travelers are (in theory) required to check in. This goes back to the time of French occupation. Even now, there are internal passports required in this regime. Tourists, of course, are spared any inconvenience by bribes. I do stand to be corrected if anyone has been there more recently than 1988. They may even be largely abandoned by now.

Alene - Happy Birthday to your only son! Have a wonderful celebration!

Ian - I, for one, enjoy your weather reports. It's FINALLY cooled off in Illinois after we received some much-needed rain. Time to mow the lawn. Who is submitting all the pics from Vietnam?

Slow 13:34 Still hot here with no rain. I would welcome a thundershower. All my spring plantings are dying. Just can't water them enough. Oh well, maybe today.

8'46. G'maEn, all. Interesting structure. That's an area I've never seen for myself.

ARLENE....hope you make it safely through the birthday celebrations...Happy birthday to your 8-y-old son! :)

Ian -
Apart from looking out the window, what would I do without you?!
Wonder if you are closer to the coast than we are...
Til tomorrow, I think....

Fi, I bet you took this picture.
Alene, I know you're having a great celebration today for your son's birthday. You will definitely be tired tonight!

7:09 Good maEn all.

Alene, Happy Birthday to your son!

maEn to all. I knew the bldg looked Asian. The world is so beautiful wherever we go!
Alene, Happy Birthday to your son. I also have six children...three boys and three girls.
 |  |
Good maEn to all! Picture is probably of a local shrine to one of the gods that are worshipped locally. You see many of these in South East Asia, usually with a god figurine inside and local offerings of candles, flowers, etc.

6.13 not so hard today

I can't figure out the times that people post - how are you doing these? If I don't 'allow incorrect moves', I get better times than I see, but if I allow incorrect moves
This one 2:34 (not allowing) - but if I did it 'properly', well, I'm REALLY impressed with your 6,7,8 minute times, no way would I approach that. Which way are most people solving these?
 |  |
Mark from Ct, I'm not sure how most people solve the puzzles, but I do allow incorrect moves and don't check moves. This one took me right at 20 minutes. No mistakes or it would have been longer! My goal each day is to do Easy under 5min, Med under 10, and Hard under 20. I think everyone just does More...
 |  |
Those sound pretty reasonable for 'pure' solving - although I wasn't going to come close to doing this one in 20m - that's VERY well done. I was just into it for 7 or 8 minutes and, well, it was still pretty darn blank....

Thanks, Steph

Mark, I've been doing the puzzles here for about 6 months and my times have gone way down since I started, but I think I've about maxed out and don't think I'll ever get any faster than I am now. It's fun to try though. Keep at it and you'll keep getting better. Good luck!

Nice

Mark: It really is a matter of just doing them. The patterns get clearer, the aids less necessary. The one thing this site is missing that others have is an automatic listing of possibilities. Since that is purely a mechanical exercise, I feel no guilt in using it. Google Sudoku (for the UK and More...

Canuk Greg: Maybe, but the power lines, the portico, the location-- all point to government administration to me. As I say, it may be one converted to another, depending on the politics in force at the time.

19:05. Pretty little yellow building in an expanse of green. Sometimes I time myself, sometimes I don't and just enjoy puzzling out the answers. I am getting better - it's so addictive. Good thing I'm retiring from work next week.

www.lovatts.com.au is a good site to check out for sudoku, kakuro, adduko and other puzzles which change daily. No pictures to reward you at the end of completion but loads of addictive fun.

To Anne, Small buildings and shrines like these are everywhere in the paddy fields in North Vietnam. We were told by our guide they are family graves... and many dont seem to have roads running adjacent to them so are not really functional in any other way. You really really shouldnt think about More...
 |  |
7:24 Interesting view - I always imagined Vietnam to be hilly/mountainous and covered in forests....

I've seen quite a few Vietnam pictures submitted on this site. I wonder if they are all from the same person.
 |  |
11:06 Steph from Kansas. No I didn't take the picture... but saw similar sites and was told by my guide (like Maggie that they are small family shrines. PJ I saw only North Vietnam on my trip and saw lots of flat paddy fields like these towards the coast and mountains to the West and to the More...

That is working with all options ticked - including allow incorrect moves. On Medium and Easy- I usually try to do the puzzles without automatically removing possibilities... If I do that on Hard, it takes me MUCH longer.
