It appears that there are multiple Martello Towers, built by the British as garrison outposts throughout the empire. If this is one of them, I'd guess that the roof is a relatively recent addition. wikipedia has lots of info and pictures.

Elsa ~ isn't google great? This could be a tower from Canada - we apparently have 16 of them. (Although the surroundings don't exactly say 'Canada' to me.) Never heard of them before - my thanks to the photographer for widening my world a wee bit!

Elsa, isn't Googel great...?? A quick check of Google revealed that there are many Martello Towers. Apparently there are, or where 74 towers along the east coast of England and there are Martello Towers in Canada and Key West Florida. So, to the Photographer and any other person submitting a photo....PLEASE describe it a bit better.

That was exactly my thought, Liz! And the mystery lives on because we still don't know where this particular Martello Tower is ...

I'll wade into the discussion surrounding the mystery of Martello Tower. It looks like at Kingston, Ontario.

fire bloss, you win the meat tray this morning. Yes it is Kingston, Ontario. The photo was taken during the year we spent in your fair country. The roof was added after it was built as one of a series of defensive mini forts around Kingston. There is at Kingston also Fort Henry which is a huge structure - but regrettably no photo. A challenge for one of you Canadians perhaps?

Kingston, eh? Well whaddaya know! That's just down the road from me. I've been to Fort Henry a few times, but today was the start of my education in Martello towers.

I'm sure everyone who put their boats away early are regretting it this year. I haven't seen so much as a sliver of ice on the St. Lawrence.

Morning Amelia, I travelled extensively around the world with the Canadians - and that's a new experience in liver damage - but not very often with a camera. But I still have some interesting photos on the pooter which I am feeding in slowly. I hope you enjoy them.
