Well Done, To Go To Alaska

Someday I hope to make it to Alaska!
 |  |
4:46 Goin' north, the rush is on ... (Was it Johnny Horton who sang that song, Dan?)
 |  |
5:37 Another of Canuk Greg's photos perhaps?
A good picture.

Maen all

Is the sign somewhere in BC, Canada?

To Cathy in CA: Yes, Johnny Horton sang it in 1960. It's from the movie 'North to Alaska' with John Wayne.

Thanks, HalT. Can't remember where I'm supposed to be half the time, but on music trivia from the 60s and 70s, I'm fairly sharp!

I spent several months camping in the Yukon and Alaska one summer. In June I wore my down coat, hat, and mitts - thought I would never get warm. In August there was snow, then a week later in September, I was wearing a sleeveless shirt! Very friendly people up that way.

Good afternoon to all! Yes Anne, another of my shots. The picture of the bottom portion of Salmom Glacier on the jigsaw yesterday was taken about 25 km. past Hyder, Alaska. You have to drive through Alaska for a short portion and then swing back into Canada on a logging road to get to the point where yesterday's picture was taken.

I read that the Alaska Pipeline has a vibration issue...mAen.

6:17 To our neighbors up north, I've always wondered what boxing day Dec 26 was for? Can someone tell me.
 |  |
Nina: Boxing Day is basically a traditional (and legislated) holiday that dates back to Canada's roots in England. It was originally a day in which landlords, the rich, etc. gave boxes of food and gifts to their tenant farmers, staff, etc. Not intending to be sarcastic to anyone's family or More...

MmAen all. hope to visit Alaska one day. Elizabeth from Ontario, sounds like an exciting trip.
 |  |
Thank you Canuk Greg for the answerto boxing day.
 |  |
Boxing Day was once called St Stephen's Day. In Australia they've started enforcing the Boxing Day Public Holiday to give shop workers time off too! The notorious 'Boxing Day Sales' have moved to the 27th for, I think, about two years now? I don't do them personally ... I buy a lot of my Christmas presents at the June sales and pick up cards and wrapping paper very late in January.

After seeing the picture, I understood -- duh huh -- How is Alaska above using km as if you're already above the US, thanks for answering Greg.

 |  |
Tazmanian: The sign is in Canada heading towards the Canada/US border, and in Canada we use kilometers, not miles like the US does, so the distance in Canada was in Canadian terminology. And as I have said in the past, I am Canadian, and the distance I had to travel through the US was also in Canadian terminology.

I think Boxing Day is still called St. Stephen's day in Ireland.

Boxing Day was when gifts were opened during the time of stricter Christmas day religious observance.
In Ireland it is still called St. Stephen’s Day or more colloquially Stephenses Day
Haven’t heard that interpretation before, Greg, but it sounds plausible.
Greg, thanks for the shout out.
