I forgot to mention - Happy Pi day to all!!! I know that for some of you it's already over, but yesterday morning there were still significant problems here in Kansas, and here it's just beginning. It holds special meaning for me.

Flamingo, shrimp, salmon, all seem same color to me! Not pink, not exactly coral either.
The various shades in this photo actually do look like the spectrum in a filet of salmon!
Had to chime in because that is my favorite color. I would paint the walls that color if my husband would let me. (I did at my first house/first husband..who was color blind!)

Flamingos are not naturally that color. Their color changes to that because of the shrimp they eat.

14:09 - Good Maen to all. I think I'll Google about 'Pi' day. A biblical passage, 'Then (Hiram of Tyre) made the molten sea; it was round, ten cubits from brim to brim, and five cubits high. A line of 30 cubits would encircle it completely.' (I Kings 7:23) They were building a basin for Solomon's Temple. I think 3 is pretty close to 3.141592. It's amazing what our ancestors figured out.

It turns out that the pink of flamingos, salmon, and cooked shrimp are similar because they come from the same source: carotenoid compounds synthesized by microalgae and phytoplankton. These are eaten by zooplankton, crustaceans (includig shrimp), and insects, which are then eaten by the fish and birds. Astaxanthin is one of the main colorants in all of them.
