3:01 Maen! I think the caption 'Altar' kind of understates the magnificence of the picture... wow!

Very ornate and magnificent -- what is the church?
21/Mar/07 12:14 AM

7:59 What an impressive looking altar, but it doesn't alter the fact that we don't know where it is.

The overwhelming question: where is this church?

Lots of detail in the picture - add to the group, what, when, where and we all perhaps know why. Love the green. 75 with a wee bit or rain today - thanks gang for sending my way.

Good one, Anne. Glorious! Add me too to what, where, when, how, who (even) - and sure and begorra, such a green, wouldn't the Irish love to claim it for St. Patty's Day!? But all the colours are so bright, my guess goes to Russia.

Sorry, I guess the title of the photo was a bit understated. It is a photo of the altar in St Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg. The green columns are made from malachite - a semi-precious stone.

Good afternoon to all! It is beautiful, but think of much much money it cost to build, and then think of what a difference it would have made if that money could have been given to those poor souls that really needed physical (as well as spiritual) help.

If you feel that way, GREG, don't EVER visit the Vatican! :)
21/Mar/07 8:11 AM

Greg, I couldn't agree more. The whole of St Petersburg is a mess of ornate palaces, lavish churches, gilt statues, domes and spires and I kept wondering just who paid for all this. Mind you it's done now and the milk has been spilt.

Thanks, Ian from Sydney. That what came in my mind first -- St Petersburg. I feel. It is in our tradition. I'd visited that place in mid 80-s, but it was under restoration then, and Altar was all covered. So I just guessed by style now.

To Canuk Greg. I agree with you completely. I always wonder, why is it, more rich country by natural resources more poor majority of people live.
About St. Petersburg. Most of this lavish statues, churches, gardens and palaces were build way back in 16-18 century. New Russians are now more interesting in breaking it all down, and building skyscrappers, and renting it for offices instead.

There will always be people who find a way to amass wealth in any country, regardless of the type of government and social structure. Sometimes it seems to be taken to ridiculous extremes as on Easter Island where the kings erected giant stone statues while they deforested their island and caused their own extinction.
