I took this photo during a visit to Lake Macquarie, I called it "Watchful Kookaburra" and it appeared on Jigsaws a couple of weeks ago. I think they have more 'personality' than any other bird in the bush, with the possible exception of the Willie Wagtail.

My husband was out at Wisemans Ferry with 2 mates a few years ago. They'd been into a shop to get some food & were standing around outside eating & talking, then woooosh & one of them was left with only the stub of his sausage roll in his fingers!

Two years ago yesterday Hurricane Wilma swept across Palm Beach County and I used this site (well, the easy page 24Oct05) as a personal blog, posting the conditions here as Wilma came closer and closer. I finally got power back on Oct 27. Doesn't seem like two years!

We had the same happen with a pelican, Dino and Kate. Were sitting in the car eating fish and chips at the beach, and the pelican put it's head right in the car and took a bit of fish! The sign said 'please don't feed the seagulls', so I guess it didn't apply to the pelican!

The kookaburras are getting bold. At Lane Cove National Park in early autumn one flew past my ear (brushed me with its wings) and landed in a friend's plate! He wasn't fast enough though. The friend closed his hands round him, lifted him off his plate onto the picnic table and sat there for a More...

There used to be an emu in Deniliquin called 'Horace' who used to wander around the golf links gobbling up the golf balls. You were allowed to drop another ball if Horace ate yours while you were playing. It was an easy [but messy] job for the local youth to follow the emu and pick up the balls More...

IslandBea, it was Wile E. Coyote.

Just BTW, kookaburras aren't small! We have them regularly land on the balcony and those beaks can be about 2-3inches long! And when you get up real close, they are kinda scary looking.
