mAen! 3:35 An interesting detail. I'm no architect, but it seems to me that the arch is sort of superfluous. I mean it's not like it is supporting any weight or is it?

Jyrki, the flying buttress is actually a vital structural component of cathedral construction. Those marvelous builders found a way to make them graceful. A perfect compromise of form & function IMO.

Good day all!

Yes, that is a flying buttress. From this angle it is easily distinguished from the male flying butt.

4:23 - You're right, Ruby, you'd know what male flying butts look like if you attended page parties with Jeb. Oh wait, that's a male sliding butt!

Thanks for the bit, Eric. On second thought I guess I sort of see how this kind of an arch could give essential support from the side. Sort of like a prop. I mean, the two halves of a full arch do support each other sideways (and give a lift to whatever lies on top of them). Here the physics of More...

Good afternoon to all! As this photo was coming into focus I thought it was a picture of old knight's armour. Good comments to explain it.

Jane, the male sliding butt is a separate sub-species and, also, easily distinguishable from the female. Sliding buttresses, the female, are rare and often discussed at great length after parties.

If you allow me to butt in... the pic makes a good abstract composition

Ruby - I don't think Jeb would appreciate being referred to as a "sub"-species. Perhaps we need to re-categorize these poor creatures.

Ruby,
Here they are discussed at other times than after parties. Good mAen.

Hi all. I thought a buttress might just be a butt with long hair (either male or female!) Great photo Sue. What & where's the building with the flying buttress?

While a flying buttress is a vital support for a cathedral, these tend to be of stone. Brick construction like this suggests a much later date when you would think buttresses were more decorative than structural.
