Plum, I'm with you on this one. My "solution" was a hack job. :)

1. After d1=6,e1=3,pairs 19 at f12;36 at gi2,unique possibilities to 29.
2. If e7=2,e3=4.Also e7=1,e9=7,e3=5 (to avoid the unresolvable 24 rectangle at de36),e3=4.UPs to 31.
3. Here I vary from Steve:If e6=2,f4=7,g6=6,g2=3=i5,pairs 45 at h14;78 at ch5,a1=7,b1=2 and b5 has no candidate.Hence e6=7 and UPs to 81.

"Inelegant" is a very good and apt description of this puzzle Plum!! More sophisticated than DanM's "hack job"!!

The puzzle just kept unfolding for me today .. and then I realised that I hadn't placed possibilities for 2s in teh top middle block ... so I may have made some serendipitous logical assumptions :) Still it worked for me today ... and I'm not going back on it.
