Did I do it? Am I first?

Alas, my evil plan of being first is ruined. Next time Fraz, next time.

Cryptic hints :
1) easy to 27 filled.
2) Looking at 1 in column Cd, at 2 in block Bb8, at 1 in column Cc, at 18 in b4b6, eliminate some possibles. Then easy to 29 filled.
3) Looking at 6 in Be5, eliminate some possibles. Looking at 4 in Cg, eliminate a2=4.
4) Looking at 7 in R1, More...

aha captain jack! Be ye the jack of diamonds? the jack of hearts? the jack-of-all trades? that famous australian 'aunty jack'? jack be nimble? jack-o-lantern? Or my favourite - the Captain Jack from Doctor Who?

Whoever you are you probably got a better time than me on this puzzle - so don't begrudge me my first first!

Hi gb,
It's been quite a while since we have communicated but I still maintain that your point remains true; ie 'it is not the time you take to solve the puzzle - but that you solve it' (or something similar). Your insight into Mathematica has been unparalleled. A Merry Xmas and Prosperous New Year to you and your family. Regards, G

I am a dreamer: i still believe that the challenge is not the timing (you can post comments or even get the picture without achieving the puzzle) but the logical process leading to the fullfilled grid.
Hi Mike from Houston, say hello to my house inside the loop 610 I used to live in.

Can't wait to finish breakfast to do these silly puzzles, don't come close to the 3 min mark, but enjoy them. snow changing to rain here, we are in for a nasty winter. great dog!
 |  |
There is no way to solve this one except by guessing
 |  |
Is this another Taz Boxer?
 |  |
joe b - just refresh your screen
 |  |
16:34 with 2 guesses, think I'll study gb's hints - tough looking dog for a tough puzzle
 |  |
 |  |
Not a Boxer - looks more like a pitt bull. He does look tough. 11:06, but forgot to restart the timer. Going to archives. See you all tomorrow.

About 4 hours!

Mike from TX - Me too, I live in Sugar Land. Small world. It's been freezing here the least few days! I moved back here to get away from cold weather and it seems to be following me!

According to me: a Tazmanian Boxer. No doubt here.
 |  |
Hi Valy,
Were you here for the oil industry? Perhaps Schlumberger? Or maybe the medical field? As you know they are both big industries here.
Hi Teresa, me too! Sugar Land is my home, just off Hwy 6 and W. Airport. 13 years ago when I moved there I would awaken in the morning to a rooster's call. Now it is traffic noise...

Hi GB,
Thanks again for your hints. I found a single FC from 50 filled that allows you to finish, however it is so complex that I think your's is easier.

I still mean to email you on the triples, however have been having problems with my home email. Hopefully I will solve them this weekend.

loaded this onto sudoku-san - says it is unsolvable by logic - so i guess you all guess until you get it right
 |  |
no guess at all. Only simple logic.
 |  |
totally solvable by logic (and time) -- at 28 filled I used the 5-4 possibilities in a4/b5 cels to deduce f2=6. (this is an FC?) That took a while! I think gb's method would have been more direct - as usual. It is nice to finally be at the point where I can usually figure it out before getting a More...

I think the Aug 8 puzzle is the toughest one I have seen in the archive. Curious to know if other people have a certain puzzle they think is the hardest for them - maybe different people are better/worse at different logical steps.
 |  |
The sudoku-san is pretty cool. It basically sets up the possibilities. Here is what it said about this puzzle: 'Using a brute-force solver I can see that there is one and only one solution, but my logical rules cannot solve it! I've gone as far as I can - can you solve it?'
 |  |
Mike - ME TOO! I also live right off of Hwy 6. and Airport. Out of all the places in Texas, and we're right down the street from each other. Too weird!
 |  |
12:03 had to guess once, this one is one of the hardest I have tried. Will try again later, with no guesses and see how I go. Cheers for now Jim.
 |  |
Oh gb!! What did you open my eyes to!! The occasional guess used to make sudoku TOUGH SO much quicker!! ;)
 |  |
Teresa, too funny! Village of Oak Lake for me, are you there too, or across from us, east of Hwy 6?
 |  |
Finally gave in and used the hints... and it's another one of my photos!! - Thanks Gath!! this one is sunrise (back in August) from the boat anchored off Bare Sand Island in Bynoe Harbour - NT. It's a wonderful spot - Flat Back turtles lay there. I've watched them at night. And the hatchlings almost make me maternal. We've sailed over there a few times now.
 |  |
Charles Darwin Uni (and others) do a bit of research there - Groups of young students are taken out to spend a week or two on the island run around at night looking for turtle tracks coming up the beach etc and recording the number of eggs laid. Check out this site for more info
