Seems funny that there could be a fire in the middle of all that water.

This puzzle today is monstrous by my way of rating puzzles. Hopefully, some alternative methods of solving this puzzle will be presented by others. In the meantime, here is my proof:

I did see some eliminations that could be made using AUR's. I did not find them very helpful, but I could have been mistaken.

Seemed pretty straightforward, unlike a lot of your puzzles. Eliminating all of the 'pointing pairs' and a single 2-string kite (for the 7 at R9C4) caused the rest of the puzzle to fall apart into single digits. It is unclear if you are implying that using forbidding chains is equivalent to plotting the results of every suspect.

I do not find that to be true. Forbidding chains, properly understood, are more general than forcing chains and do not require any plotting at all.

I do, however, agree completely that deducing a solution is more enjoyable than beating a confession out of every suspect.

I do not agree that the techniques that I am teaching are anything other than the former.

Moreover, a careful reading of my blog shows that I can prove not only the deductions, but also that their need be no resorting to beatings.

Still beyond Sudoku jargon! This one had more linked eliminations (my own term for FCs) than some others, but still as fun and challenging till the end.

I like making guesses, using trial and error. It's sort of fun to lay out all the possibilities and see where each one leads. :)

Sometimes it seems to be a matter of luck where you start. The first time I attempted this, it was horrible (well, it was after 1am), but on the second attempt, after eliminations from locked numbers, hidden pairs, triplets etc, an fc on 3s from c8 (via c3 I think) made the whole thing fall aprt. Much appreciate your blogs Steve, and feel Im starting to get there, albeit slowly.

Hi all! This photo was taken while we were picnicking in our (excellent) position for the New Year's Eve Fireworks in Sydney! There was no fire - though there can be boat fires which is what the boat is for. Someone did try to swim from the northside shore to the Opera House - and got arrested. More...

Steve, I wasn't referring to forbidding chains at all. I only became aware of your blog today. Your lessons are very useful. Paralleling what I learned studying at www.sudocue.net. In print I found all that conditional logic daunting until I realised you were just spelling out what we learn to do More...
