G'Maen to all - especially BAZ!

MAEN =
Morning
Afternoon
Evening
Night

Common usage calls for you to capitalize the letter representing the time of day in your location at the time of posting.

This might even make it into the Oxford Dictionary one day!

Hello everyone,

I'm having a difficult time knowing where to start fc's. I can solve all the hards no problem, but seem to always get stuck with these toughs. Can some of you sudoku masters lend any suggestions? Anything would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

9:30 with three guesses - better than usual for me. Nice picture of a tropical fish!
 |  |
inedible seafood

What are fc's?

Yellow submarine...
 |  |
Maen to all. Not your average Canadian lake trout, but very nice and bright.
 |  |
I had to make four guesses. :( Nice yellow tang!
 |  |
Hey, Hey, Hey! Can it be??? They finally used a picture I submitted. Yippee! This was taken last year at the Baltimore Aquarium, Baltimore, MD. The Tough was HARD - had to guess 3 times. Yuk!

14:57 with 2 guesses. Here, fishy, fishy.....
 |  |
Patty, from PA.... Nice photo I thought I recognized the little guy.
 |  |
Very nice picture Patty. You should submit this to the kids sudoku level. I think they need some new colorful shots. My granddaughter age 7 likes it.

This one seemed really tough. I had to make 5 guesses! I echo the comments of Elizabeth from Houston.
 |  |
I an with Elizabeth and MB. I stopped doing tough's as I always have to guess at least twice. Hards seem to be getting easier!! Some hints would be great.
 |  |
where's all our experts when we need them????
I could not find any logic to solve this. I had to make 4 guesses to solve. There has to be a better way! Is my brain fried? Was this puzzle solveable using any logic other than trial and error? I finally unchecked 'allow incorrect moves', but the red light never came on. No fun on this one.

Nice pic of a Yellow Tang (or Lemon Surgeonfish) - Hawaiian native.

Sorry late to the party today!

Here is a possible solution, unchecked for typo's as I have but little time:

1) Start at 22 filled - the given puzzle. Unique Possibilities to 26. (UP 26).
2) b4=3 == b4=6 -- b1=6 == b1=1 -- f1=1 == f1=3 forbids f4=3.
3) Consider the two More...
 |  |
BTW - please forgive the certain typo's. This puzzle quite a monster also - debuted for the first time the use of a conditional Almost Locked Hidden set. I was wondering when that would pop up!
 |  |
Cool today- great fish reminds me of our Great Barrier Reef.
 |  |
Hmmmm - I suppose that I only used the Almost Locked Hidden Set for two steps, not three as I indicated. 'Tis a shame I cannot count!
 |  |
31:24 Well I didn't find this hard at all. BUT I am SO so so slow in comparison to others. Still have so much to learn here.
 |  |
11:52 Finally the cold weather has arrived (though I think that it might have slowed my brain somewhat) though still not a cloud in the sky.
 |  |
Steve from Ohio - Would like to try to follow your solutions but gave up Maths many years ago - can you suggest a reference to help understand?
Will try the puzzle now, however a bit daunting after the previous comments. I shall guess shamelessly if all else fails, in order to view the Yellow Tang!

I solved it in my own tedious way...and really screwed it up by messing up with the sixes. ugh.

I've never been able to figure out whether rows, 9blocks, or columns are what folks use the letter refs for. Can someone point me to the place where they explain which way the letters/number More...

Hi, koloka from Hawaii
Go to the bottom of this site and click on 'Proofs'.
Then click on 'Bruno's Sudoku Proofs'.
Then click on 'A notation tutorial for absolute beginners'.
Good luck!

Thanks Miko, wish I'd seen that link ages ago. I use a strange process of visual elimination (not really a mathematical approach) but it works...and I guess that's all that matters in the end. It just takes me a lot longer than most to do a Tough, and I've never even done an Easy in under 3:30. hrumph.

 |  |
hey koloka i used to do the same what you are trying thats the'strange process of visual eliminations' and it did work..but if you really want the puzzle to be solved, in some cases this eliminations alone doesnt work and these technique are reqd.i am still learning though...
till i learn fully, guessing rules...
 |  |
30:59 That was tedious! I couldn't do it without 4 guesses. Nice yellow fish. Good Maen all!
 |  |
11.09 but I had to keep checking and guessing, so not really unaided.
 |  |
I can't believe that there is another jindera person who is a sudoku addict

Alternate? solution:
1. Given 22, UP to 26
2. b4=3 == b4=6 -- b1=6 == b1=1 -- f1=1 == f1=3, elim f4=3
3. e6=3 == e4=3 -- b4=3 == b4=6 -- ac6=6 == d6=6-- d5=6 == d5=14, note d2=14. if e6=3, then d6=6 and d6 <> 1, else if d5=14, pair 14 at d25 eliminates d6=1 UP27
4. locked 1's at More...

Took too long. But no guesses.
