Strange bedfellows!

Maen all,
This made me laugh! Do they do this often? Someone's pets?
 |  |
Good Maen to all. Great picture! I would have thought that Fluffy was the bunny! Just goes to show you!!
 |  |
Must be a holiday for me to get on the 1st page!

 |  |
Is it a Tortoise or a Terrapin?
 |  |
Who won? the tortoise or the bunny?
 |  |

 |  |
10:24 a pic that's truly hard to describe! love the rose petals! good Maen all.
 |  |
I needed one guess for this one - and I guessed wrong!

Let me see if I have the names right for this picture - the tortoise is named 'Fluffy?'

Good strategy for the hare to get a tie,if the outcome of the proper race would be according to the
Aesopus (greek) myth!
 |  |
1) Start at 22 filled - the given puzzle. Unique Possibilities to 23. (UP 23)
2) Locked 4's at hi7 forbid 4 from abc7.
3) Pair 73 at b27 forbids 3 from b169 and 7 from b169. UP 28.
4) Locked 9's at ef5 forbid 9 from i5.
5) c6=4 == c6=9 -- i6=9 == i7=9 -- i7=4 == h7=4 forbids h6=4. UP More...

Needed one guess. Great picture!
 |  |
LOVE the pic! My daughters have had many rabbits for pets. The turtle my daughter owns she has had for 20 years!! Wonder how old the one in the picture is.
 |  |
Interestingly enough - to me anyway - exactly the same difficulty rating for this proof as yesterday's 'final' version.
 |  |
Just when I thought I'd seen everything ... great picture. Cheers to all!

I did this independently of Steve, but I would have a hard time proving it:

1) Start 22, UP to 23.
2) Locked 4s at hi7 forbid abc7=4.
3) Naked pair 37 at c27 forbids c1=37, c6=37, c9=37. UP 28.
4) c6=4 == c6=9 -- c4=9 == g4=9 -- g8=9 == i7=9 -- i7=4 == h7=4 forbids h6=4. UP More...
 |  |
The only thing in my proof that would help Steve's would be combining his steps 4 and 7 and using the naked pair.
 |  |
Great picture!

Re: Who won? Easy for the hare to win the race...all he has to do after the relaxing ride is hop off over the tortoise's head to cross the finish line first!!!
 |  |
Love the photo!!!!!!!!
 |  |
A truly amazing photo!
 |  |
4.27 to set up, 5mins+ to finish forgot to restart timer after setup...
 |  |
Looks the bunny is putting the 'fast' moves on the turtle.
 |  |
21:54 Hi All.
That's a smart rabbit but the tortoise will still win; if only by a nose.
 |  |
Steve & Clark,
you're doing a great job and I'm sure you don't mind some suggestions :)
I'm in favour of proving that a number occupies a cell, rather than denying the possible location (I know, sometimes this is not possible). For many people who don't have mathematical backgrounds might More...

All great pics today but i cant decide between the pond and the humming birds
 |  |
16:08 only one guess. Great photo. Fluffy is picking up a hitchhiker!
 |  |
Steve, Clark or anyone else who understands chains, would you mind checking that this is correct. I think I finally “get” chains. This is an alternative to Steve’s step 8. I realize that it is a couple of steps longer, therefore not as good, but at least I worked out a valid proof More...
 |  |
Nic. Hurrah for your suggestion. It's always been my inclination to describe my solution as you have suggested as it seems possible then for anyone to follow the logic. It's taken me ages to really grasp the method favoured by Steve and Clark. It seems to me that their more mathematical More...

love the photo! forgot to time today.

for my money, today's best photo is either the pond or the tortoise and rabbit.

Definitely brings to mind Aesop's fables. Now we know why the tortoise won: because the hare was too lazy to go the distance, a good starter but couldn't finish!
 |  |
I think that the bunny should get a faster taxi.
 |  |
Fluffy is the tortoise. Of course. No guesses today - very pleased with myself!
 |  |
The primary reason that I prefer a forbidding chain over proving that a number occupies a square is that sometimes the strong sets forbid more than one number from more than one cell. Although this does not happen often, when it does, the alternate system proposed does not handle that situation at More...
 |  |
Another reason for forbidding a number rather than proving a number is that it is more consistent with other techiques - like pairs etc. Forbidding one number may be part of a process towards eventually proving one number somewhere, or a series of numbers. See , for example, Meg's proof yesterday's puzzle.
 |  |
Meg - your forbidding chain is perfect.
 |  |
14:37 seemed easier than more recent ones. I guess I missed out on the earlier difficulty ratings by Steve, but I do like having a quantitative measurement of difficulty rather than assessing how much hair I've pulled out.
