My son has his driving test tomorrow morning, at present he is out on a driving lesson getting that final bit of practice in. My fingers will be crossed for him to pass.

I am trying to sew some today. Al needs new scrub tops for summer, his choice for a work shirt in hot weather. He prefers 100% cotton, I could buy cotton poly, but have to make the all cotton. Some of his shirts last year were really worn.

So far I have managed to find 4 fabrics suitable More...

everyone. I haven't been chatty 'cause that fever hasn't broken, yet. I am hot, sweaty and clammy, and don't like it. At least we won't be having any visitors for a while.

This cold spell should be over, finally. It was in the mid- thirties last night.... by tomorrow, we should be in the eighties!

It's been years since I have done any sewing. I used to make IH's shirts, but got really discouraged when he would either spill ink on them, or put great rips in them within 24 hours. I don't like doing a lot of work for nothing.

Heidi hope you feel better soon.
I gave up on sewing a lot when I found that it was far cheaper to buy clothes than it was to make them. I still occassionally get the sewing machine out for minor repairs or adjustments.

I made clothes because I could make the styles I wanted in the fabrics I wanted, without spending months searching for exactly what I wanted. With eBay, it's MUCH easier to find what I want than make it.

I still find it is less expensive to make than to buy some clothing. Poly cotton Scrub shirts are around $10, I need 2 yards of cottons, and I have cottons I found for $1 or $2 a yard. when I find that kind of price, I would buy a LOT. MizT I wish we had fabric stores like that now, in fact it would be nice to have a decent fabric shop.
Same goes for knitting wools it is so expensive that it is actually a lot cheaper to buy ready made. I know making your own you can make it exactly how you want it but when it costs three times as much as a bought object is it really worth it.

Brenda, I wish we still had fabric shops like that hehe. The stores I frequented that had $1 tables upped them to minimum of $2, and up, mostly up. but I do think our fabrics are much less than they are in England and in Australia.

Now I can really tell my age, and talk about cotton fabric for 49 to 69 cents a yard. Well, it was only 36 inches wide, but I remember going with Mom as a child and picking out fabric I wanted for a dress or a skirt.

Hi everyone.Yippee..I have 3 days off now and have already done the shopping on my way home from work yesterday.Now I dont have to go into town unless I want to.
MizT..suppose they no longer have material sales like that anymore.Enjoy the sewing.
Saw on tv that prices for bread and milk were much dearer here than in UK or USA.Aust doen't have enough competition with supermarkets.

Nola, what is the cost of bread in your neck of the woods. To buy a decent loaf of bread here you will pay anything from £1.75. Milk is £1.53 for 4 pints. Prices vary but that is what I pay.

Brenda...bread here varies enormously but a nice grain bread will be about $4.Milk $2 a litre.
You may be able to convert...I definately can't.

MizT, I don't know about now, but when I moved here in 2000 the fabrics were MUCH more expensive than I could get them for in CA. And wools/yarns too. We had several privately owned fabric shops until Spotlight opened. Now we have Spotlight and one quilting fabric shop which only stocks the specialists fabrics at $18-$25 per metre.

Suzy..we dont drink much milk which is why I only buy 1 ltr at a time.I also don't buy home brand washing liquid or toiletries.Have looked at the ingredients for surface sprays and they contain exactly the same for a lot less,some things are good and some we dont like.

By the sound of those prices Nola we pay about the same for bread and milk. If we wanted the 'fancy' branded milk it would be more expensive.

Last milk I bought at Aldis was $2.25 a gallon, that is why I drive 35 minutes to shop there! A nice whole grain bread is $1.45. A large loaf of 100% whole wheat is 99 cents. MizT, Aldi charges about the same as many generic products here (including milk and bread), but have a lot of other stuff that you can't get as a generic product that is a lot cheaper too. I save a lot on the stuff I can get there, which is about 2/3 of my shopping list.

Too much milk, Suzy, too much milk. I buy it only for guests and cooking, about 1 litre a week and usually throw away some of it when it gets to it's use-by-date.

Ummm, Suzy, I WAS joking about too much milk, I would never advocate children not drinking milk - I do get it in for my grandies but they seldom drink it - I always make them have cereal for breakfast at least. They'll drink it flavoured but I won't buy flavourings except maybe Milo in winter.
